When I was a child, my Grandmother told me about how she and her sisters and brother had lots of pets (one per sibling). When a pet died, they would have a funeral for the pet and all the pets would come and all her sisters. Her brother would say a few words, and they'd bury the pet.

This was before I lost a pet, but knowing that there was a way to handle the loss, surrounded by family, made it easier.

Takes a huge douchebag to put a dog down because it became inconvenient. If your doggo is a happy pup let him keep on keeping on. If he's in pain and doesn't seem right.. then you gotta do your little man a favor and put him down.

All I matter of if he’s happy and good to go. If so, sure, live it up. But before spending $6k on surgery that’s likely to not work I would say go adopt another pup that might be desperate for a home — it’s the type of spot where you might save a healthy life, save your friend a lot of tough times, and have money that you could invest in a whole lot of impactful ways. Always a though spot when you know your pup is hurting and you don’t know if you can fix it though.

I'm not complaining about the Vet School. They are great and have wonderful staff that have helped us in the past with other dachshunds. This just costs a lot to do.
I'm forever grateful to the LSU Vet School. My drunken neighbor shot my Toy Poofle with "rat shot" when she was a puppy back in 2005. The bullet hit her rib cage and went into her stomach.....took her the Vet school and they performed emergency surgery in the middle of the night to save her from bleeding out internally.i had to ask God to forgive my neighbor or I would have killed him but he still owes me the $1600 for the surgery when we moved out of town after Katrina.

Abby the Super Poodle is now almost 13 years old!

I know someone that had a large dog with a wheelchair. The dog had a neurological disease that caused his back legs to be paralyzed. The dog had a good quality of life for about 2-3 more years. He lived to be about 10 yrs. He took long walks daily and was able to go outside to do his business and walk around the house with his wheelchair. He basically sat on the floor when in the house with the family. Which is not much different than a healthy dog. I would consider the wheelchair if there are no other serious health issues.

Real sorry to hear about your situation. Brings back scary and painful memories when my dog hurt himself, though things ended well.

Try doggie acupuncture. Two years ago our dachshund hurt his back jumping off the sofa. Vet recommended acupuncture versus surgery because of the cost. $50-$60 per visit for about three months of visits. Cost us a couple of hundred versus a couple of thousand. Our dachshund soon was back walking and running. We have just been more watchful of his jumping and running.
