My go to answer for this question is always The Kaiser Chiefs.
Their albums Employment(2005) and Yours Truly, Angry Mob(2007) are both pretty good.
They are pretty popular in the U.K. Maybe like a Weezer or Green Day are over here. When they show up to festivals like Glastonbury, they always have the crowd going, but they are never and never will be the headliner.
"Ruby" was a pretty popular song among the "alt" crowd, but they just never took off here. That sucks, because they rarely make it over here. If they do, I'm a bit old to be going to Kaiser Chiefs concerts now anyway.
Honorable Mention goes to First Aid Kit. They are a combination of Folk/Americana/Country/Pop--with an edge. They deserve to be on Saturday Night Live in support of their new album being released in January. They probably won't get much wider publicity because their music is too good, too well written, too thoughtful, and too awesome. They are sublime.
