It's ridiculous that people are so worried about getting $5 worth of candy stolen.

Don't put out candy if you're that worried about five freaking dollars, you morons.

So poor children can't be well raised and respectful? Is that what you are trying to say?

bullshite.

I'm so sure your kids told you their Halloween was ruined because all the poor kids stole the candy.

Get a grip man.

Maybe the parents live in a rough neighborhood. Maybe they would love to be able to take their child trick or treating in their own neighborhood...but they have legit reasons to believe that is not a wise idea. I can't fault a parent from wanting to give their child a decent Halloween.

I get the anger at people that abuse the system, at teenagers not in costume demanding candy, etc. But what about those parents who are doing the best they can and working hard and are still stuck in poverty? Instead of getting so angry and spewing such hatred...couldn't you instead just be thankful you live in a safe neighborhood with your family?

If you were poor and had a child, but lived in an unsafe neighborhood, what would you do for them on Halloween?

Great response.

The majority of the people on this site are crotchety old racist assholes with zero compassion for people who have experienced struggles in their life.

How much does it cost to get some extra candy? You can get a huge bag of candy at Costco for $15. Buy two. Make some kids happy.

We have kids getting bused into our neighborhood and they never cause trouble. If anything, it's the shithead 12 year olds that actually live in the neighborhood causing issues.

I think you win the thread. Just practice compassion and gratitude and get on with things . It’s two hours of your life - sit outside - pour a drink and spread some joy to a kid.

It's a non issue here, they do not allow ragamuffins in my neighborhood.

We enjoy it and welcome them to our neighborhood.

The kids and their moms are very appreciative of the Godiva chocolates that we pass out.

We've even gone as far as allowing them to use our address and put a utility bill in their name so they can establish residency in our school district without having to pay property taxes.

And the thank you cards we receive in the mail two to three days later are really a nice gesture too. We share them with our children and remind them to always share what we have, because others are counting on us to do so.

I am not the state or federal government. I do not subsidize the poor underprivileged kids in the greater BR area. They don't look at this as a let me get free of my poor, drug infested, homicidal demilitarized zone. They look at it as oh goody we get to go get some free shite and get the "good candy." I ain't rich but I ain't poor. I live in a nice neighborhood to get away from less desirables and this is the night you think you get to invade my turf for free stuff.

And I bet you vote for state and federal candidates who promise to take away subsidies for the poor because it should be the people providing charity and not the government.

This. I have found most, if not all, to be decent people wishing their circumstances were different.

At least in my neighborhood, we didn't have unsupervised kids or 17 year olds without costumes. I wouldn't like that either.

Ragamuffin is a British term that was coined in reference to British children with ragged clothes... hence the word "rag".

But thanks for showing your stupidity.

I just don't get it. It's innocent kids. Who don't have a say in the circumstances they are born into.

I was poor as a kid, luckily for us our neighborhood in NBR wasn't THAT bad when I was a child in the 80s. We could still go trick or treating and not feel unsafe(with a parent or other grown up with us of course). But if things weren't safe...I'm sure my parents would have taken us to another neighborhood so we could safely go trick or treating. Based on some of the OT's thoughts...tough shite...no Halloween for me if I was a kid in a rough neighborhood. Stay down in the dirt you piece of filthy poor trash. You are not even worth a piece of Halloween candy.

Most of the children I cared for when I was still a peds nurse were pretty poor, whether they were black, white, hispanic, or native american. And most of those kids sweet, loving children like any other child. Children that were still raised by their poor parents to say thank you and show respect to others. Parents that want the best for their kids, like any other parent regardless of their income.

You pay taxes so you do subsidize already. Sorry you're worried about $10 extra bucks for candy.
