Their only connection to Italy is their last name. Can't speak it. Never stepped foot on Italian soil.

Read “Albion’s Seed”. Deals with this in a small section of that book, and the whole book is pretty interesting.
Breaks down early American settlement into 4 big groupings, and beliefs, lifestyles, politics, etc follow pretty closely from those groups.

I wonder why you're offended people identify with a country that's existed since 1776 but you have no problem that far more people identify as German when that country has only existed since 1871.
(For those who don't know shite about history, before the founding of The German Empire in January 1871, the people who lived in what we now consider "Germany" were far more likely to identify with whatever area (like Barvaria, Saxony, Prussia, etc) they lived in than as "German". So in other words, people have been calling themselves "American" almost 100 years longer than they've been calling themselves Germans.)

If you’re asked about your ancestry, it is implied that the question is asking about where did your ancestors live before coming to America? So you’d presumably say England. Most of us, our ancestry doesn’t go back so far in America. My great grandpa came from Germany. Most anyone would assume “ancestry” refers to more than a few generations back.
