Did he live or was he offed, whats the reasoning behind your opinion?

When the lights went out Tony got shot in the back of the head.

Idk why the director was dead set on fricking the audience.

How did the director frick the audience?
I thought it was obvious was happened. He was shot in the head by the guy in the dinner. Everything went black and silent. Dead.
Where’s the ambiguity?

Because it isnt clear whether tony dies or not

I don't know where the article is but it breaks down the viewing perspective pretty well. Also I think he mentioned that the audience really related to Tony and wanted to be like him. So when the screen goes black, what Tony sees is nothing and that's why we see nothing. When you die everything goes dark.

It's the greatest ending in TV history

How?
Because it's ten years later and people are still talking about it

I re-watched the whole series about a year ago. I came to a very different conclusion.
At the start of the show, Tony was a captain of "that pygmy" thing in Jersey. At the end of the show, Tony was the boss of a family that went toe-to-toe with a NY family and won.
In that diner sat a man who was at the absolute height of his power. He'd lost almost everything to get there, but he was there.

but, for real. I actually did appreciate it when it happened. I believe David Chase gave an interview where he explained it. He refused to say whether or not Tony died, but he did go on to say it was a conscious decision to end it like that, because Tony's fate was not the point of the series. A clear death or a clear living for Tony would not have done the series justice. The objective was the moral struggle of the audience with how and why they root for the villain. If Tony was clearly killed, then that moral struggle would be over. If Tony was clearly still alive then that moral struggle would be over. The ambiguity of his fate perpetuates the moral struggle of the audience liking an evil character.

From what ive read the director, chase was disheartened by the fact that so many people identified/ likes tony, a sociopath

Correct, so he perpetuated that theme forever by leaving Tony's fate ambiguous.

I've always thought Tony lived. The last shot isn't through Tony's eyes, it's a shot of Tony looking up when the bell rang. If it was Tony looking at Meadow I would think he died.
I think the dread you feel watching the final scene, looking at everyone in the diner is the dread Tony feels.

why did it take meadow so long to park?

That's not true based on Medical Journal studies where people have died on the operating tables.
Contrary to darkness...they all report seeing a blinding light. There have been numerous studies supporting this white light phenomenon.
So if Chase had done his homework, it wouldn't have been fade to black but fade to white.
