Is America Devolving into Soft Totalitarianism?

I've seen very few articles so brutally honest and brilliantly articulate. I'll paste one paragraph, and then I'll link to the actual article, as well as two others, below. The basic premise here is inspired by Tocqueville's prophetic vision that the comfort of generations of peaceful democratic society would eventually lead to individualism and non-community, paving the way for the State to permeate basic communal functions that the citizenry no longer performs itself. Individuals in this state continue to pursue, and encourage the government to endorse, more vulgar (not necessarily a sexual connotation here) pleasures while giving up thief self-government and self-will in the process.

Americans have now existed for more than two generations as the wards of the national state they demanded be built to satisfy their physical needs and wants. Their economic, political, and even social lives now are regulated by statutes and regulations seeing to it that everyone is officially tended to (whether well or ill is another matter, but one the experts insist they alone can address). But meeting basic needs has proven insufficient. Demand for comforts has emptied the public purse even as it has exposed the cultural consequences of dependency in crime, squalor, and hopelessness. Meanwhile, the state has expanded its ends to include a different, no less impossible goal, namely fairness, defined as equal treatment by everyone in all things. In the new state, no one is to be favored over anyone else in employment, housing, education, and welfare. Whether employees or employers, people’s lives are structured to maintain compliance with work rules, environmental regulations, and anti-discrimination regimes that require persistent training sessions and reporting to special “compliance” committees. Everyone is guaranteed equal treatment throughout their lives in the same fashion that they are required to prove that they are treating others equally, that they are not harming the environment, and that they are not somehow promoting or approving religion or traditional lifestyles above previously more marginal choices. Their lives and characters are shaped by a pervasive apparatus controlled from the political center.

I'll give you this, the Pendulum is swinging back and it will swing a long way over before she heads back to the Center.
IT is the way life works, to over play or over state what is occurring is ignorance

Check out the column on nola.com about record low turnout for elections recently.
People either believe their votes won't make any difference, or believe that they already have what they want: basic needs supplied by the gov't, so they don't need to make choices at the polls.

I think this sentiment is very common and there is an attempt by some to play it up even further using the poplar election results from November.
ETA: But local elections never have a huge turnout.

Leftist Globalism can't take control here in the USA without some level of authoritarianism or totalitarianism. So, IMHO, we will have it in about 100 years.

I've oft posited the idea that it will require a pseudo-Authoritarian State to secure even the most minimal degree of societal civility...given the polar Ideological (Marxist/Fascist) challenge of the Progressive hegemony.
"Can two walk together lest they be agreed?". The Progressive dominance of Education Institutions has now virtually brainwashed a couple of Generations of individuals...and Antifa is the consequence therein.
A booming economy is the best antidote to this poison. Let's hope and pray that works...or it'll be the historical version, I.e., "the barrel of a gun".

So you're going to answer to liberalism by being as authoritarian as you think they want to be? And somehow you don't like antifa? It's odd to me considering you both share the same logical fallacy

America is soft.
Otherwise, we would have already thrown out all the illegals and wiped out SJWs, BLM, Antifa, and such.

And how do you suggest that would have worked? Are you suggesting that America change its entire Foundation to be the best America? Some of you"patriots" are pure shite.

I noticed you mixed up your tenses here. You used the present participle tense implying that the change is currently taking place, where I am sure you meant to use the past perfect "has devolved" meaning that the change has already finished.

Not saying I'm happy with that option, Eb; just saying that we have choices between the lesser of two evils. Kinda like NOKO, we can either pre-empt with a severe loss of life.....or we can respond AFTER we have been hit. Of course, we have the third option of acquiescing to Un's nuclear blackmail/extortion and send him a check every month.
I'm saying that to the degree that BLM/Antifa becomes violently terrorist/disruptive...to that degree the State will have to respond in order for a basic economy and the necessary flow of essential goods and services to exist.
That aside, given the job loss due to high-tech...there is little doubt that the future *Government* will be involved in allocating basic goods and services. Merit...nws...apparently. In that argument, I argued for basic QUALIFIERS before subsidies are given...lest the responsible folk subsidize immorality and impracticality. Which is essentially suicidal. Which is what we are now witnessing.
