re: Former Active Duty Military Disdain for NG or Reservists

I would say March 2003. The National Guard went from a strategic, to a now, operational reserve. Second wave into Iraq, in Mar 2004, consisted of three “enhanced” NG brigades. The 30th, 39th and 81st BCT’s were going into augment 1st ID and 7th CAV.
After their deployments, each enhanced Brigade became a “Modular” BDE, able to plug into an active component Division with ease. Now they had the same equipment (MTOE), same para/LIN (personnel slots), and mission tasks (METL) as their active component brethren. National Guard units were required to do the same missions as the AC.
I came into the NG from the active component in 2001. Prior to that I was with 3/2ID on JBLM. Coming into the Guard initially was a total shock. It was the “dirty Guard” stereotype. Things moved at a snails pace but they could and did get the job done. Post 9/11 changed the Guard forever.
I’ve got two trips to Iraq under my belt. But my proudest moment as a Guardsman was spending a month in New Orleans East in Sep/Oct 05 as a rifle company commander helping out post Katrina. I was responsible from Crowder-Hayne to Chef Menteur, from Lakefront Airport and down south to the river. My FOB was located directly at the intersection of Crowder Hayne and the Levy, across from the elementary school.
We were there because the LAARNG was in Iraq. Fortunately they fast tracked their relief in place to get them home.

Your right, it is totally different. My goal was not to belittle the NG/NR, but to point out the differences/frustrations I expirienced. Worked with quite a few NG members that didnt have any job knowledge, or a clue on basic military functions. GI bill eligibility was their only reason for volunteering to deploy. Also, I cannot count how many times I had to go install/repair equipment for the tenat ANG unit, at my home station(not LANG).

Served Katrina Duty from Aug 29th to Mid December. High Water Rescue, Security, Body Recovery and Patrols.
Interesting times for a 23 year old.
Eta: I was acting Platoon Sergeant for a small part of it.

Former Air Force here, Honestly, I have never understood why some people need others to validate their service. In my book, if you signed the line and served honorably, then good on ya and thanks for your service.
What about those 90 day deployments, AF guys?
Usually went over 90 days, some places the accommodations were awesome, others not so much. Not all AFSC's get to live the plush life.

I was active duty air force... i had intel analysts from air force reserve working for me in afganistan. They were well educated beyond that of most enlisted intel analysts and most had multiple delpoyments under their belts. I usually had less problems with them than their active duty counter parts. My last deployment 7/10 or so had graduate degrees and ranged e-4 to e-7... And they all volunteered for the deployment.

I spent 4 years active Army. Got out and joined the Natl Guard while in school. Would not recommend it. Loved my active duty time. The time in the Guard was an absolute waste. Soldiers were no different than on active so no point in my railing on them. But, that leadership was crap. Fulltime NGers running the show were effin morons.

So far I've only gotten grief from Former Air Force and Navy guys. Both instances the guy would be "So you never Enlisted?" which I chuckle with "That's what the E in my pay grade stands for". Then I also mention that I have deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. Always their response "Yeah, we all have".
Sure is a lot of butt hurt from a seemingly humble lot. So what gives? What keeps eating at the Former Active guys in regards to Part Timers?
I have almost 18 years of Service in the LANG and still going. Come at me.
Former Navy here.... I'd never tease anyone who ACTUALLY served in the suck.
You have my respect and props bro. I'd buy ya a beer if I knew ya.
Now, if you were a puddlejumpin coastie trying to act all hard...then I'd tease you relentlessly

The reason they have disdain, is because reservists will get paid do literally do nothing but show up once a month, for a weekend. Then wine and fricking cry, when it's time to pay the piper, and they have go to war.
All i heard was nothing but whining and crying all over facebook about having to pay the piper for that government $$$. I'm 2 old, i have a family, woah is me.
U signed up, so buck up buttercup.

No hard feelings about it, think it's strange. Feel free to give your input.
People in the military give other people in the military shite about lots of things. Usually this means they like you, or at least feel at ease enough with you to talk trash, but they don't mean anything by it.
That's always been my experience anyway. I'm Navy (Fleet Reserve) btw.

Fleet reserve is where they send all the navy transgenders, right?

I am slowly becoming pretty comfortable being a piece of shite at this point. Just close out my 20, pat myself on the back and peace out.
