Ok thats what I was wondering about more specifically is the movies made prior to even television being in every home. It took 37 years to make it to the small screen
But then you had Citizen Kane, which had been rotating on local TV stations since the 50's and Wizard of Oz, which was shown once a year on network TV going back to the 50's. So it was hit and miss as to which "big" films were special enough to not be on TV all of the time.

Pay per view usually had it a few months before it came out on VHS

When a really big movie came to TV it was a really big deal. Kids would talk about it in school the next day.

I think I remember that and it wasnt just a short engagement either right? It was almost as big a deal as the first run
It was huge because people thought, this will be my only chance ever to see E.T. again.
I forgot what Spielberg was claiming but rights this and studio rights that...
Nobody thought it would ever be released on VHS...in fact they even marketed it that way...Last Chance to see E.T.
Man we were suckers.

I like the quote in Boogie Nights...
"Did you see that Star Wars movie?"
"Yeah, like 3 times."
Knowing if you didn't keep going back to the cinema, you weren't going to see that movie again.

We also had Disney movies on Sunday night...

This. I would assume the fervor over TV and Film wasn't nearly as high as it is today.

Disney would re-release their movies in the theaters for the next generation of kids.
I recall seeing a double feature of "Dumbo" (1941) and "The Legend of Lobo" (1962) in the 70s in a theater.
I also recall going to see Smokey and the Bandit in the theater after it had been run on network TV. Small town. What else you gonna do?

I remember before we got a VCR, we had some type of small projector - 8mm? We would go to the library and rent reel to reel movies. I remember my favorites were Born Free and The Deep, staring Nick Nolte.

I dont know if anyone has mentioned this factor but there were less movies. Each year we add to that total. Exponentially.

I saw movies like The African Queen, The Bridge Over the River Kwai, The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), National Velvet and more at a drive in theater. My mom and dad put my two brothers and I I'm the old 63 Ford Falcon station wagon, with a bunch of Kool-Aid and popcorn, and saw some good really old movies.
