Jerry Layne's Strike Zone for the Cubs Nationals Game Last Night

Fangraphs interactive strike zone so you can see more details of the pitches
Jerry Layne has been an umpire for 28 years and a crew chief for 24. Last night's zone was inexcusable. Any pitch on the bottom 1/3rd of the plate was a coin flip ball/strike.
He was bad for both teams, but MLB needs to get on this. You can't have pitchers throwing perfect strikeout pitches keeping the AB alive because of a wrong call

In his defense, he was concussed.

I feel this is every game. Worst thing to happen to the game was showing fans the "K zone".

Also, if I had to guess, the pitch that Baez swung at in the 9th is way off the top of that chart

That is a pretty good indication on why it was a high scoring game.....
He called 3 strikes that should have been balls
He called 30 balls that should have been strikes
Yikes

I counted 19 strikes that were in the zone, not on the corner, that were called balls.
3 strikes called that were out of the zone
Pathetic

I know it's not an original thought but if we can have that pretty graph, why the hell do we need a human umpire?
So strange.

I don't understand why they don't go with the automated balls and strikes. It's being implemented in some minor league games.
He was bad behind the plate. It's part of the reason so many runs were scored. He squeezed the zone. It was either walk the batter or give him a meatball down the middle and hope for the best.

Yeah, pitches that are on the line are understandable. The ones that are basically grooved are not.

The Baez pitch is was almost 7 feet high. I'm not sure why any pitcher throws him a strike?

I disagree. The pitch details are the first down line of a baseball broadcast--an excellent addition to the game. The worst thing to happen to the game is the abomination of designating someone to hit.

right. all we need are lights behind the plate.

Give the umps a vibrating buzzer that vibrates when there's a strike. They make the signal or indicate it's a ball. They make calls on swings, fouls, catcher/batter interference, and plays at the plate.
End the madness.
Consistency will make the game better.

He sucked across the board. I also hate how he takes forever to call a strike.
Eta: Im pretty sure he makes an audible call right away, then takes a second to make the call with his arm. Still you cant hear the audible call on TV and the lateness is infuriating

Doesn't look as bad on brooks baseball's strike zone plots, although there are some outliers.
quote:
These strikezone maps are now drawn to reflect the 2015 zone "as called" to LHH and RHH hitters. These strikezone maps were drawn to the specifications of Mike Fast, a former writer for Baseball Prospectus who now works for the Houston Astros. These plots show actual calls superimposed onto dashed lines that represent the strikezones that all Umpires generally call. The dashed lines shift to represent typical deviations for LHH and RHH.

Youtube Man vs. Machine
I'm not sure what you are talking about. The system is pretty flawless. There are no lights but only cameras strategically set up around the stadium.
