Anyone here hunt with a slug gun much? Have to use one in Virginia and wanted to get the OBs advice on good ammo. I bought Hornady Custom Lite sabots in both 12 and 20 (wife is hunting too). Anyone have other recommendations? TIA.

Gonne let my oldest boy hunt with slugs a little this year. His barrel isn't rifled though. Will those sabots still work

I don’t think you will get near the accuracy as you can get with the tru ball or other slugs made to fire out of smoothbores

Savage model 220. Remington accutips. Nikon slughunter. Deadly and incredible performance from a slug gun.

The only slugs I have seen a consistent "rifle" with are the Hornady 20 ga SST. From my experience those are the only slug worth the extra cash, most in my opinion just tumble.

I tried the Hornady SST out of my 20 GA and could not get any consistent grouping. I switched to the Remington Accutip and it was a game changer.

1" groups at 100 yards is the norm for this round and my slug gun.

H&R 20ga slug gun with a Nikon Slug Hunter. 1inch groups at 100yds with the accutips.

Lightfield makes some really good heavy stuff but it's very hard on the shoulder.

I would second this, hard to find the 20 ga 5/8 oz up here but these things were awesome out my old LT20.

That is about the premium slug setup right there, very nice.

Ill just buy a couple boxes of each and shoot them all (over a couple different sessions ) and see what works. Thanks for helping me narrow it down to a couple solid choices.

I use Federal Truball in my smoothbore 12 gauge. I bought a rifled slug choke tube. That will work with the sabots

Yes sir. Honestly wouldn't feel any more confident with a 300 win mag in the stand. Inside 200yds them slugs bring the heat!

Some areas also allow muzzleloaders during a slug hunt.

What part of VA?

I'm up here too. I shooy Hornady SST's, 2-3/4 12 ga. Accurate out to 100, probably farther but haven't checked it.
