I'm 43 and my 401k has grown in ways I've never thought possible in a year. I am tempted to scale is back as it's very aggressive. Does that make any sense to do at my age. I am not talking about my contribution just changing allocation. I am in a target year 2050 fund because I just picked it because I wanted to be mostly stocks.

Have you ever played that arcade game where a light spins in a circle and the goal is to time it so you hit the button when the light is directly in front of you? Timing the market for 99.99999% of people is like playing that game with your eyes closed. The final .00001% of people are elite financial/economic minds that get to play the game with their eyes open

So what should one do? The answer is to determine your acceptable level of risk and plan accordingly

-Are you okay with the risk of your 401k of mostly stocks dropping a lot with the hope it can earn it back before you retire?

-Are you okay with the risk of changing your 401k to be less equity/stock focused and missing out on larger market gains?

The answer depends on what your acceptable levels of risk are. You'll have to do that research to make an informed assessment
