Would you take Richard Jefferson?

It appears that the Cavs prefer to trade him, but most likely would have to end up outright releasing him. Assuming we get the DPE after a few games or if we can maybe move someone else would you take him? I like smart veterans on this team.

I thought he was done a decade ago, when he was with the Spurs. It blows my mind that he is still in the league. I don't mind an older PG, C or situational shooter. But wing players should be explosive and athletic. Jefferson just isn't anymore..

Does he have a pulse and can he play the 3?

The first question to ask is if 37 year old Richard Jefferson, who shot 33% from 3 last year and has a PER under 10 the last 2 years, is better than Darius Miller 2.0. If the answer is no then he wouldn't get enough minutes to justify cutting Crawford, which is the obvious move to make if you wanted to add RJ.

I thought he only came back for the Cavs. I would bet he would simply retire if they released him (unless the Warriors, Thunder, Spurs or Rockets came calling).

The answer is an obvious no. He has a handful of nice moments with the Cavs but he wouldn't be useful here. I believe Miller will at least be OK, and he is young.

Dude's about as solid a role player as you could ask for.

Sure i'll take him. RJ and Frye for Moore.
RJ might not be worth a poop anymore, and he may just decide to quit, which is fine by me. Gives us close to $10 million in expirings if so, and we get a 3 point threat to replace Moore. Saves Cleveland $1.5M in salary, which i would assume is a lot more than $1.5M when it comes to taxes.
Asik goes away b/c of health, and we just created an extra $20M in cap space for next year. Get rid of Ajinca and we've got $25M.
Go into 2019 with just Jrue/AD/Solo on contracts ($2M of Diallo/Jackson) so it's right around $60M.
Don't know what Cousins hold is, but i'd imagine around $20 somehtihng, so we'd have a good bit of cap space actually to sign a legit guy, like Robert Covington.
Go into 2019 after taking Rockets to 7 games in first round with Diallo looking good all season, Jackson getting some PT late in the season showing promise, and not trading the draft pick b/c we need to have some minimum contract contributors with the big contracts we have.
Rondo/Jackson
Jrue/Crawford/Miller
Covington/Solo
AD/Diallo
Cousins/1st round pick

This is not correct. If you zero out Moore/Asik/Ajinca you have $1 million in cap space but would be about $23 million away from the tax line. The problem is you'd only have the $8.4 million MLE and the $3.3 million BAE, or $12 million worth of exceptions to fill that $23 million in tax space.
Those numbers are with Cousins making $30 million, but even figuring in his caphold of $27 million instead still doesn't give you any usable cap space. Just more tax space that you don't have enough exceptions to fill.

Cousins $27
Jrue $26
AD $25
Solo $13
Miller/Diallo/Jackson $5M
$96M
i didn't think the Cousins cap hold was that high. Always best to show your work.
That being said, Solo and 2018 first round pick for a S&T for Covington, if that's possible, and assuming we can get him for not much more than $20M/yr.

$96 is about right using his cap hold, and against a $101 million cap projection you have no functional cap space because the MLE is bigger than the cap space you have.
There's no reason to dump Moore to create cap space if Asik will be getting retired and you can dump Ajinca like QPon next summer or maybe as part of a trade. Again, you'll have about $23 million in tax space, but only $12 million in exceptions and I guess another $5 million worth of uneven trading.
I just don't see the benefit of a straight dump of Moore. I'd rather either keep him or use him as salary in a trade. One thing to keep in mind is that it sounds like Rondo came here on a discount. If things work out we won't have his Bird Rights and he'll have leverage against the Pels. It's not crazy to think he could get enough of the MLE that you can't keep Clark in which case you'd definitely want Moore still on the roster.

I like Moore, but you can find guys for less than $3M to do what he does, and you don't have to pay them for 3 more years. That's why i want to get rid of him, as well as Solo.
If there's a chance to trade Moore for an expiring contract that can still play, do it.
No point in keeping guys with long contracts that aren't core players.

I'm just not sure they have the exceptions to pull that off. In an ideal world you can split the MLE between Clark and Rondo. Clark takes Moore's place for half the price and then do some Moore + Ajinca + picks for an upgrade somewhere else.
But if Rondo tells the team he needs at least $6 million or he's gone, you might not have the money to keep Clark and have to hope Frank Jackson or whoever you trade for can fill that hole.

Dont move anyone to take jefferson.
He wont sit the bench well. He was a money pit for the warriors. Had a bad attitude coming off the deeeep bench for the champs couple years ago.
Punk of shame.
Full of beans.

I'd rather take Cousin George

Who would you start at the 3 over Jefferson? Yes, we are that bad at the position...

any non-rookie contract examples?

James Ennis
Troy Daniels
Kyle Anderson
Will Barton
Jodie Meeks (although he's never healthy)
Afflalo just signed for the minimum
Ramon Sessions
Brandon Rush
Gerald Green
Luke Babbit
Moore is a guy that won't play more than 20 minutes a game and won't score in double digits on average.
Can those guys above give you 15 minutes a game and hit a few threes for $5M+/yr less.
I like Moore, and i think he's an underrated defender. I just think it's stupid to give a bench player a 4 year contract. He's not integral to the core of the team, yet the contract you gave him makes him.
The only longer than 2 year contracts any team should have is for their superstars and rookies, imo.

to each his own, but i would rather have Moore at his salary than most of those guys, even at their lower numbers.
now, i do agree that giving a rotation player 4 years guaranteed can be foolish. i think Moore's deal is fair given what he brings, but i understand your point and its a smart one.
though let's say they do find a Barton or another Ennis, having those extra years makes it easier to keep them too

I'd rather Moore as well, even at $8M, just not for 4 years.
