Just because O is horrible, doesn't mean firing Les was the wrong decision

Les' tenure here had run its course. He was unwilling to make the needed changes and it was time to move on. That doesn't mean Les wasn't a great coach for LSU.
The problem was that LSU delayed the process, and then on top of that Alleva tried to outsmart everyone on top of the fact that he has no backbone.
O was an emotional hire, much like Bill Stewart at WVU. This hire was worse, however, because you had a known history of failure as a real head coach (not interim) in Orgeron.
Basically, if Alleva couldn't get Jimbo or Herman, he wasn't really going to do anything else. The true leadership there would've been to take a risk on an up and comer and stand behind it. Instead, he made the easy hire to appease other fans while fanning the flames that the others didn't want to be here.
Now LSU will suffer the consequences, and while you may believe firing a coach after just one year will turn off a bunch of candidates, you are going to lose more than $4.5 Million next year if O stays as coach and things play out as they are right now (likely 3-9 or 4-8 finish).
If you are going to make a change anytime in the next two years, just do it at the end of this year and move forward as soon as possible.

All true. Great post.

True but as many of us feared our AD wasn't up to the task therefore we feared the firing. TN could say the same thing about Fulmer and they still dont have it back on track all these years later.

Les became stale here, it was correct to fire him
LSU screwed up TWICE
he should have been fired in 2015, if he is, O isn't the coach today
If I knew LSU would replace Les with O, I would have stuck with Les. hiring O was the dumbest move possible on our part

Georgia is the perfect example.
They found the right guy and look better than I've seen them in quite some time.

I agree

I defended Miles for years and even I agree with that.
Though, I'd say it ought to have been done either at the end of 2015 or the end of 2016. We actually, in retrospect, got no advantage at all in firing him after 4 games and took an unnecessary PR hit in the process. If we were going to just promote the mother fricking DL coach, we could have waited until the end of the year...

It does if the coach you hire is worse then the coach you had. In what business action is it ever ok to make a decision which causes your product to get worse or be of less value?
Anyone not seeing this shite show coming has had their head suck in the sand.

Well of course but to fire him to only hire O was a mistake

Firing les was absolutely the right move. Hiring Karl Childers was not, and that's on our inept AD, but also on the president of the university and bobby jindal for cockblocking our inept AD who was actually prepared to make a strong move the year before.

I don't disagree that it was time for Miles to go, however...I sure as hell don't even breathe a word about firing him until I already know and have a verbal agreement with his replacement. If you've read the USA Today article then you already know that hiring O was a panic hire done on pure emotion.

We fired the 2nd best coach in program history only to replace him with a complete laughing stock.
ETA: we deserve this
