https://apnews.com/bf595941ba9640e9ab32e474459f529c/Nielsen:-Football-ratings-off-11-percent-this-year
2016 saw the NFL ratings decline roughly 10% year over year, the first decline in decades.
2017 is thus far down 11% from the already declined 2016.
NFL ratings have declined roughly 20% from their 2015 highs. That's 1 in 5 viewers gone. If I were a business and lost about 20% of my customers in 2 years I'd be rather alarmed.
"Cord cutting tho!"
Certainly a major factor, although the vast majority of the games every week are available on free broadcast TV (CBS/FOX) and other types of broadcasting haven't dropped 20% in 2 years. If it were just cord cutting wouldn't the 20% be consistent across the board? Seems like the NFL is shedding viewers at a rate much faster than other programming is losing viewers.

Don't know about you but my DTV bill charges me about $10 a month to watch my local channels if I want the HD picture they are broadcasting so in essence, it ain't free.

Every other sector of tv would die to have the viewers the NFL has.

True but irrelevant to the overall point. Businesses want to grow, not shrink. Just because the NFL pulls in way more viewers than the Home Shopping Network doesn't mean they are doing a good job.

Tv numbers are down across the board. What's their reason?

What is the point? Only the Olympics , Academy Awards and NBA finals prevented a clean sweep of the 10 most watched shows last year.
Traditional tv viewing dropped considerably amongst the youngest sector of the tv viewing audience. The decline was considerably less as the age groups increased
Trump chose his targets, NFL and NBA. Both are increasing in team values at incredible rates.
Keep talking tv. They are talking $$$$

You know you can plug rabbit ears into your TV and get free local programming? In high definition.

They aren't loosing money *yet*
But that's because every sport negotiates their tv contracts over long time periods, not monthly. The NFL has not renegotiated their tv deals in the last year, hence they haven't lost any money from loosing tv customers. Yet.
But you're being willfully ignorant if you believe that a 20% demand decrease will play absolutely no role in the next negotiating round.

Spot on!! All of these networks will now have the upper hand in negotiations. Why would they pay the NFL more for a product that is declining? They have the leverage to save money and pay less for the NFL. That's why you can bet your arse, that behind closed doors, these owners are pissed at these protest. They know that if the trend continues, they are going to eventually cost them money. The irony is that these players don't realize that it will cost them future money as well. If the owners lose money....so will the players! Keep biting the hands that feeds you NFL.

They won't lose money. You believe 14 MLB owners lost money last year?

Let your boss cut your income by say 10% and claim this.

Good luck advertising with sectors dropping off faster than the NFL. The NFL will get theirs. Trust me.

I'll ask you again. 14 ML teams"lost money" last year. Do you believe 14 MLB owners lost money last year?
If you do, you don't understand professional sports team ownership.
