Wouldn't surprise me at all if he is the head ref for the LSU/Alabama game.

Obviously you don't know the requirements for SEC football officials. On of which is one must have played SEC football. So it doesn't matter. And by the way there is no head referee on the field. There are the following: Referee, Umpire, Linesman, Line Judge, Field Judge, Back Judge, Side Judge, and Center Judge. I get tired of people NOT in the know using the term "head referee".

Should be some sort of an ethics issue or something. He at least should be in another conference and not able to officiate his alma mata or the conference

Well the requirement of having to play in the SEC is the root of the corruption. That seems like a very convenient rule to keep the fraternity Brothers together and let no outsiders in.
As far as the head ref question the referee is the leader of the officiating crew is he not?

Football officials are commonly, but incorrectly, referred to as referees, but each position has specific duties and a specific name: referee, umpire, head linesman (or down judge), line judge, back judge, side judge, center judge (in Division I college football) and field judge. Because the referee is responsible for the general supervision of the game, the position is sometimes referred to as head referee or crew chief.

Officials work in crews, the same people every week. And the crew will not work a game in which the referee is an alumni.

Either that's a new rule, or it's been broken several times in recent history.

Are you sure about this? I know of a back judge hired last year that absolutely did not.
