Jets just traded Sheldon Richardson to the Seahawks for Jermaine Kearse and a 2nd round pick. They will also flip 7th rounder according to Shefter.
Well that sucks.
Well that sucks.

Seahawks also gave up a 2nd and 7th rounder so I'm good.

Why does that suck? They lose a receiving option to gain Dline help and had to give up a second rounder and also have to give Richardson big money, eating up cap space on a team that's been thinning in depth.
And if it's because we could have gotten him, no thanks. A 2nd plus needing to pay him isn't worth it, and our line is looking pretty good. Richardson wouldn't be the type of DE we would need anyway as he plays Jordan's spot/role.

I'm not a Seahawks expert (not my team) but I'm under the impression that they have cap now since they've been letting so many players walk.
This was a very good deal for them IMO

They have less space than us ($7.7 mil to our $8.5 mil).
So despite letting a bunch of guys go the last 3 years they are still heading into a hole, and this Richardson trade won't help that.

Interesting Richardson is a player that the Jets have been shopping last off season and this one. Kearse was out in Seattle as well, so it seems like to me that Seattle over paid with the 2nd round pick because they didn't want to bid on the open market.
I wonder what a 2nd round pick would be worth in monetary value.

They gave up Kearse who they were going to cut. They gave up a second rounder, but that doesn't matter this year. This year they got a lot better on the defensive front. I would really hate to go up against an Avril, Bennett, Richardson, Clark line on passing downs at Centurylink field in the playoffs.
Regardless of how you think this effecst their future, it makes them more formidable this year.

I believe its a relatively common practice among teams to apply a points system to draft picks. The points are calculated by the contract the pick warrants and the going rate on that market for a specific position. I have seen some charts that rank the 1st overall pick in the draft at approximately 500 points while pick 224 (last pick in the draft) is ranked at approximately 40 points. So trading a pick for a player would have to be calculated on how his current salary and statistics play into those points for the pick that is being traded. I have seen though how this does not stop teams from over compensating each other for players...i.e. Robert Griffin III.

I think they overpaid too. Yeah they were shopping him last year. Sometimes you overpay when the need is there.
