My wife and I were given tickets to an Astros game on the 22nd of September. it looks like the games will definitely be played. Is it foolish and too soon to try and make a weekend out of it then? If there is anyone in the area with an idea on whether such a trip is a good idea or not, please advise.

Come on down, man.
The areas where you would want to "make a weekend out of it" are pretty much fine now, and will definitely be fine by then.
Everyone is having staffing issues right now, but you'll be good by then.

Thank you for the info. I had been looking forward to going as my wife had never been to an Astros game.
Do you recommend any parking locations?

I recommend staying in a downtown hotel and Ubering or walking everywhere you go if that's the area you'll be staying in. Lots of good food and drink downtown. Plenty to keep you and the wife busy for the weekend.
Otherwise, there are public surface lots surrounding the stadium that will decrease in price as you get farther away. A spot is never hard to find. You'll just pay for it appropriately.

Park at Hyunh Vietnamese restaurant for a killer meal and a short walk to Minute Maid.
