The suspension of disbelief one needs to think white supremacists are bigger threats to blacks than blacks themselves is mind boggling.

Well, once you understand the fact that no one is allowed to allowed to question black culture, then it makes perfect sense. Black people aren't even allowed to question or call to light the negative aspects of black culture. When everything bad is someone or something else's fault then you really only have to search for new things and people to blame to solve any problems.
Mitch blamed statues, not crumbling infrastructure, poor schools and lack of economic opportunities, for "the best and brightest" leaving the city.
