Recreational boating waterways question

I recently purchased a boat and I am trying to do some homework on the area before taking the kids out on the water. I didn't grow up in the area so I'm not really sure where to go to bring the kids tubing and knee boarding. The launches that are closest to me is Templet's in French Settlement and the St John Boat Club. I've heard the Diversion Canal and Amite River are fine for tubing/knee boarding but what about Lake Maurepas?
Also, are there any places with beaches that are accessible by boat in the area (like Indian Creek)? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. TIA

You need the River Rat Rob Maurepas map. Should be able to find it at most launches. River Rat Rob Map
Don't tube or ski on the Diversion on the weekend in the summer, you can go to Blind River or the Amite to get away from the boat traffic. There are a couple of sandbars, including one on the west side of Lake Maurepas. Water gets a couple of feet deep and everyone anchors and drinks

Thanks. I've been looking for maps online but had no luck. I will stop and grab one tomorrow

Canal Bank at Hwy 22 and the Diversion is a popular launch point. Don't go to Hilltop.

Can you tube and knee board on Lake Maurepas? I am assuming you can but want to make sure before going out there.

If the lake is smooth, yes, but if it is rough, no. How big is your boat?

21 ft deck boat with an I/O Volvo 5.0

You will be ok, in that size. Watch that lake carefully for thunderstorms. The lake is shallow and can get very rough, very fast.

Does it have a lot of tree stumps just below the water line?

No, but don't go running near the shore, very shallow there. RRR's map will give you headings of where it is safe to run. Swing wide south when you enter Maurepas from Blind River. There is navigation platform, stay south of it.

Thank you for your help. My dad always says that going unprepared on the water can ruin your day and someone else's.
Any other suggestions outside the Lake Maurapas area, that's within driving distance?

Lake Varret has some options, but I don't ever go there, so I can't help. Also the Diversion is crawling with PD and green jeans, make sure all your boat stuff is proper or they will bend you over

I repeat, do not pull your kids on tube, etc. behind the boat on the Diversion canal on a weekend. Way too much boat traffic and the water gets rough from all the wakes bouncing off the bulkheads. It's really unsafe on weekends for tubing. The stretch of Amite River between Fred's on the River and the rock wier would be a much better option.
Side note, make sure you follow the signs at the rock wier for the boatway. Lots of people don't realize that there at submerged rocks and they try to cut across and tear up their boat. I'm sure River Rat Rob will have this area labeled on his map.

Im out there quite a bit and will second EVERYTHING Wick has said. Please do not tube the Diverson. Way to many boats and it gets rough as shite out there. Very easy for an accident. Stick to the blind river, Amite and the lake.

I actually didn't think people tubed or skied down the Diversion because of all the houses and traffic on the canal. I was kinda surprised when I was told people did pull people behind the boat. I thought it would be a no wake zone most of the way with people using it to get to the lake.

Only people with no common sense lol. Now don't get me wrong, Diversion may be one of the better places to kneeboard/wakeboard during the week only when there is no boat traffic because it is so straight.

They do, I live on the Diversion and see it all the time.? Normally someone is seriously hurt or killed every year. The bulkheads cause for some pretty big waves and people get tossed off and waves make it difficult to see the people in the water and they get hit.

Might be a little more of a haul for you, but the Belle River area has ton of options. Since as long as I can remember, I've never seen a weekend or even holiday where you couldn't do the recreational activities.
Heading away from the Spunky Monkey right passed Graveyard Island is a great opening we always use.

Belle River wouldn't be a bad haul for a day trip every now and then. Thanks

I'm glad you started this. Any options closer to Metairie good for the same things with beach, restaraunt access? Something other than lake p south shore and mandeville beaches?
