Is the military's "rigorous" testing program completely ineffective?

or

Is this just a glaring example of bribery of top brass?

Third option....

Sig knew about said defect and only used fixed guns in the trials, while selling bonk guns to the public. Then planned to charge the govt more money for said fix.

Or, the trials didn't involve that specific hit, or the safety included with those models solves the problem.

Meanwhile, my Taurus is slinging lead down the range.

I mean the p320 slings lead too all day, just sometimes not intentionally. This isn't an issue of it not firing.

"Downrange" isn't the usual trajectory of the misfires either

Maybe Headslash is a friend of my wife. She takes issue with ~ 60% of what I say, and at least 90% of what she thinks I'm gonna say.

Or maybe -- just maybe -- has become an emoticon that means "I agree 100% with everything you've posted."

Hey, while we are talking, is there anything in 9mm particularly suited to small hands? The wife is opening up to the possibility of getting a gun, and we may be in BR Saturday.

Pasting bookmarked post but...

And finally if she has really small hands she may have trouble with many double stack designs.

Honestly, most grips that are tapered make it easy for women to shoot. I've seen this numerous times in my classes. The most well-liked guns that women shoot in my classes are my M&P full size, and my girlfriend's VP9. Guns like a Glock 19/17, FN FNS9, FNX45, Springfield XD, or any gun without a grip taper will feel 2x4ish. The "grip taper" I'm referring to is that the width of the grip increases as you get father from the slide. So it will be slimmer closer to the slide than at the magwell. Here's what I mean (notice the VP9 is slimmer at the top and the Glock has the same width throughout the grip):

A woman who isn't afraid to put a strong grip on the gun and goes to the range for a little practice shouldn't have any problems with a 9mm or .40.

You make it seem like they need a gorilla grip to control a 9mm. The 40 may have brisk and snappy recoil but a full sized 9mm is a very soft-shooting gun. Practically anyone short of an infant or toddler can shoot one.

I want a 1911, so I could get her one of the M&P thumb safety models and have two very different guns in 9. Yay.

The 1911 actually has a very slim profile and one of those in 9mm would be extremely soft if she can't handle the 45 (even though I bet she can). But an M&P9 would give you a lot more capacity and has that changeable grip swell.

Any reasons for insisting on a manual thumb safety? I know it gets beat to death but for a defensive handgun it really isn't necessary as long as the trigger is protected. But if you insist on it, no problem. I will say that the M&P's thumb safety design is pretty shitty though. I talk about it in this review. Go to 19:30 to hear my points:

Don't get started on this with him. You'll lose brain cells. Suffice it to say, he's "adamant" on this particular issue and will not be swayed.

Alx Tgr...

May want to go and let your wife lay hands on an M&P. IMO, the thumb safety and slide release are a little tough. Plus just the action of pull the slide back, etc. Maybe it will get better after a few hundred rounds, but for my wife I went with the Sig P238.

The thumb safety is spongy as hell and the slide release will smooth out over time.

It is not difficult to rack the slide on most full size semi automatic handguns if using the overhand racking method. It utilizes large muscle groups rather than isolating the forearms with the sling shot type racking method. I have yet to find any person in one of my concealed classes who can't rack the slide on a full sized M&P/VP9/FNS9/G19/G17/PPQ/XD9.

Just now seeing your query. Also saw your mention of 1911 and M&P.

If you get a 1911 I'd make sure to get a reliable make (e.g. Kimber, deservedly or not, has a worse reputation for reliability than a Springfield. I am no expert on 1911's (despite owning three of them).

I'd recommend that she try the M&P Shield - but keep in mind that some have reported cycling problems in recently manufactured Shields.

I know you prefer mechanical safeties, but it would be instructive to try a couple of the Glocks. The Glock 43n is quite small. But it'll have quite a bit of recoil and be harder to control than a G26 or a G19.

I'd also let her try the G19 AFTER she tries the G43. I have only had one woman student ever whose hands were too small to hold the G19.

Getting back to reliable 9mm with mechanical safeties, the XD is probably one of the better choices. The larger (physically) it is (there are several models), the easier it will be to control and the softer the recoil will be.
