re: AP & Honors classes to be partly decided by skin color, not intelligence?

Interesting -- I thought the work of American public schools was to teach kids how to read, write, multiply and divide.
Looks like they've got one part of this down.

OMG. Such a viewpoint you have. Giftedness.

AP and honors should be solely based on academic qualifications, skin color should not be a factor at all.

It was under their "vision"
is to have proportional representation.
And conveniently, it almost matches their demographic profile. Although this is a little different since it's from last year white population is at 42%, but that's down a couple percent from the year before. So it's decreasing:
2016-2017 Fast Facts
So basically they just presented their goal for the future that their AP classes to reflect the composition of their student body.
I don't know why anybody would have a problem with that as a GOAL, but not a quota requirement. Are quotas even legal?

A parent should send that note to Jeff Sessions.

White folks tend to voice their displeasure by simply leaving, because folks who do like this parent did are met with your reaction. Then, 20-30 years later, morons complain that white people didn't try to "work with them" and "make things better" and instead just up and left.
ETA: See Birmingham, Alabama.

Just FYI. Todd Starnes is probably the biggest "fake news" columnist at Fox. He consistently writes inaccurate stories, makes them overly dramatic, and too often only presents one side of the story without much effort put into the other side
Sounds like the wapo mission statement.
quote:
o with 13.1% African Americans enrolled, they are actually going to make their quota (12%) smaller than the enrollment. And the only group they are going to make larger is Hispanic? Then again why would they even make there quotas since it's actually not that far from their proportion of student population (46% white; 30% Hispanic; 13% AA; 2% Asian; 1% American Indian; 7% two or more races
Seriously. You're relentless desperation to be contrarian is starting to degrade your cognitive ability.
The reason is the same reason for every quota, because if it were strictly merit based a much larger percentage of one or two of those demographics would be represented in the AP and honors classes.

But you're usually not so insulting. Are you a Todd Starnes fan?

Will the schools mandate proportional athletics participation as well?

quote:Those aren't quotas. That is their vision statement, and it reflects their district's demographic profile.
The reason is the same reason for every quota, because if it were strictly merit based a much larger percentage of one or two of those demographics would be represented in the AP and honors classes.
Although this was a higher education case, SCOTUS ruled that specific racial quotas for enrollment/placement were impermissible.
And the only reason Affirmative Action was upheld in the U of M case, was because they said AA wasn't equivalent to a racial quota.
Grutter v. Bollinger
Regents of the Univ. of Cal. v. Bakke
So here we have:
1. A statement following the heading of "vision" that reflects the demographic profile of the district.
2. A unequivocal denial of any policy that makes race based decisions for placement.
3. A SCOTUS decision that ruled against racial quotas in education placement.
So it seems clear that it is a vision statement, and not a policy that the lawyers would have shut down immediately, especially since they had such a strong denial.

If they aren't quotas, they don't English good.
quote:That's consistent with the purpose of a VISION statement.
Vision: Through our collective work, advanced classes such as AP and Honors will have proportional representation,” read the letter. “Proportional representation is 40% White, 35% Hispanic, 12% African American, 10% mixed race.
Vision Statement Definition
quote:
An aspirational description of what an organization would like to achieve or accomplish in the mid-term or long-term future. It is intended to serves as a clear guide for choosing current and future courses of action.
And here are some of vision statements from major companies that use similar language:
Sample Vision Statements
Pfizer
quote:Honda (1970)
We will become the world's most valued company to patients, customers, colleagues, investors, business partners, and the communities where we work and live.
quote:Clearly "destroying" Yamaha could not have been a rule or regulation, since it's an independent company. But if you interpreted that statement like the one in the OP's article, then it must be a specific policy.
We will destroy Yamaha

If this is true, it is unconstitutional. SCOTUS has expressly ruled that quotas are unconstitutional. Its taught in any 1L Con law class, which makes me question the authenticity of this report. Every school district has a staff attorney, and they should be fired if they let this go forward.

Right and their vision is to institute a quota.

Representing a populations demographics is the goal of most quotas, I don't know what point you think this is making.

How the hell did Mexicans come to be 35% of Virginias population? Do that many Virginians need their lawns mowed?
Posted on 8/8/17 at 9:52 pm to Turbeauxdog
quote:No there vision is to have their advanced classes represent their student population.
Right and their vision is to institute a quota.
But in that case, then it sounds like someone is supporting a similar cause:
quote:
While 48% of today's workforce are women, only 24%
of people in STEM fields are female. And when you think about where the jobs of the future are coming from, that's a very frightening statistic. And we're actually moving in the wrong direction. Over the course of a little over a decade, women's participation in science,
engineering, math, and technology has actually slid from just around 30 to now in the low 20s depending on which of those disciplines.
quote:Ivanka Trump: STEM fields need more educated women
So it's really important that we think about the introduction of girls in STEM fields in the school system, making sure that they are really participating in these fields because when we think about equal pay and the challenge we have to FINALLY LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD, I think this will be a very important component when we think about the future in doing just that.
Of course she's not arguing for a quota, she's arguing for the goal of improving women's participation in STEM to decrease the disparity.
quote:But there is nothing wrong with setting a goal to improve the outcomes and participation of demographics. Who would have a problem with those groups improving and being able to meet the requirements of those advanced classes?
Representing a populations demographics is the goal of most quotas, I don't know what point you think this is making.
Just like it's a goal to bring people out of poverty, and I think that's pretty universal. But redistribution of wealth via governmental policy to do it, is a policy that is definitely not universal.
OR just like it's pretty universal to want everybody to have access to necessary healthcare. But supporting that goal, is not the same as Socialized Medicine.

Of course. But this school is, they listed the figures in their statement.
quote:
But there is nothing wrong with setting a goal to improve the outcomes and participation of demographics
Says who? In a public setting? Of course it is. Resources are finite. The only way to do that is to divert a disproportionate amount of resources from one group to another based on their race. Which when you read this schools "how" is exactly what they plan to do.
quote:
Just like it's a goal to bring people out of poverty, and I think that's pretty universal
Awful false equivalency . If the schools goal was to have more students who qualify for AP and honors classes you'd have a point. But it wasn't , their goal was to have more people of certain colors qualify for AP and honors classes.

Only 8% Hispanic
But reading up on the school district, it's one of the few (or only) public schools with a private endowment. And it has a unique private-public partnership via an educational foundation.
The Perks of a Public School Partnership
quote:
It was reorganized in 2004 to its current structure and serves as a partnership between the Handley Board of Trustees, the Winchester Public Schools, the Judges Athletic Association and the John Handley High School Museum and Archives, says H. Russell Potts, Jr., a former Republican state senator and currently WEF executive director.
quote:The school and campus is amazing for a high school though.
That history of supporting public education continues in the City of Winchester today, says Potts. John Handley High School is one of few endowed public high schools across the nation, and the WEF goal is to increase the amount of funds available through the endowment for all city public schools, says Potts.
