my comp and collision will cover MY damages if i'm hit by a uninsured motorists. so what do i need uninsured motorists for again?
And I have great health insurance, what is it that purchasing 'uninsured motorist' will get me, that I need, that I don't already get??
Can anyone answer this in laymens terns?

By the time the Gravy Train gets the tech he's referring to, the productive citizens (if there are any left in Baton Rouge) will be fricking flying cars.

your theory works if you're thinking a small scale accident
imagine getting t-boned by a person without insurance and you lose the use of your arms or suffer some other injuries so that you can't work for a year. sure your comp will cover your car being totaled and your health insurance will cover the medical bills, but what about everything else?

Blame the piece of shite rich lawyers and chiropractors and the idiot judges that allow every asswipe that gets rear ended $50k, which they will only see about $8k worth since the piece of shite lawyer and doctor get the majority of it.
And these idiot judges and lawyers want to raise the limit for a non jury trial to $100k so they can make even more money off louisiana drivers.
frick them and the dip shits that think they deserve money b/c they got bumped from behind.
The only correlation cited in the article between Louisiana and the No. 1 state, Michigan, is the number of uninsured drivers on the road.
Do you have any article or study showing Michigan's legal climate is the main reason it is the No. 1 state?

I hope you don't miss any significant time from work and don't suffer any serious injuries.

New car technology is going to take care of this for the most part in the next decade. Auto collision warning, autobraking, side and rear collision alerts are amazing. I have them on my 2017, Soon enough they'll be mandatory.

what is everything else? If i'm out of work for a year b/c of an injury, i'll still get paid under short term disability b/c i have a real job with a large company.
What happens if i'm playing a flag football game and jump for a ball and get undercut on accident and land on my neck and get paralyzed? should i get insurance for this as well since i won't be able to work?

But wouldn't my short and long term work comp coverage through aflak (I think) help fill that gap?

i never said anything about michigan, and i don't give a shite about michigan.
i was strictly talking about the piece of shite lawyers, doctors and judges that all make bank off of worthless people trying to get a few dollars they don't deserve b/c someone bumped their car.

Check your short-term policy for what you actually get paid and if there is a waiting period or not.
If you think that's more probable than getting hit by a dipshit with no insurance then don't worry about UM. It's considerably cheaper than what you're paying for liability, but I almost kind don't want you to get the coverage at this point

Your medical insurance will pay for your expenses minus your deductible. It will not pay for pain and suffering, loss of wages(past or future), or compensation to the family in the event of wrongful death. I am a retired ins agent. I can tell you that I never saw an attorney who did not buy UM. THAT should tell you something. Ins agents will not go without it. THAT should also tell you something. The other option is to listen to random posters on the internet who read something somewhere one time....

It seems to me like th number of uninsured drivers on the road is the main driver of the cost of insurance. That's the thing the No. 1 and No. 2 states have i common, at least according to the article.
You're never one to spit out LABI talking points so I get it, but I'm just not seeing where the legal climate is as much of a driver of costs is as the number of uninsured drivers, but I'm certainly open to be educated.

pain, suffering, your deductible, etc
and not everyone has short-term disability, even those who work for "Real companies"

In Michigan's case the uninsured rate may correlate to the number of people getting cheap cars from the Big Three.
I know Chrysler in particular would have a number of employees who would get a highly discounted shitmobile through their work, get either bare bones insurance or no insurance, then drive it until it has to be abandoned and start the process again.
Trying to remember the exact numbers but getting a new car for used car prices means it is cheaper to just get a new one than have insurance repair it if it gets in a bad enough accident.

I've been wanting to find some literature from teh companies to the agents on this... UM comes default by law o your policy, and you have to opt out of it. If you look at what you pay in your premium, UM coverage is much cheaper than liability coverage. The actuaries run the numbers and that's how it comes out. However, it still puts the insurance companies on the hook for whatever the limits are on the UM coverage. I think companies are telling agents to push not having UM and that it's not really necessary.
I can't prove it, but I'd love to find a document to that effect

Depends on the terms of the policy, but that sounds like a work policy ie, only if you're injured on the job

Can you still buy a mixed drink at drive in window in south louisiana?
Texas has a drive through liquor store that has its own exit on the interstate.

Uninsured motorist follows you. Not your car.
I had an accident a few years ago while riding with a girl in college. She was uninsured. The person who hit us was uninsured.
My underinsured policy paid almost 70k in medical bills/deductibles for me with zero effect on my insurance rates.

Louisiana should establish no-fault and tort reform. Then, we should see more favorable rates.

Also.....what happens if you are so badly injured....that you cannot work at your job again? You think most companies are just gonna hold your position for a year or longer?
I mean sure you would qualify for long term disability...but would that be enough to live off of(especially now if you have much higher medical needs say if you were wheelchair bound, etc)?
