If cops won't even talk about a shooting incident without a lawyer, then you shouldn't either.

While this is certainly good advice with respect to media, the cops want to get a statement from you when they arrive on the scene and get your account of what happened. So you will have to do some talking about the incident which makes it a different scenario than police shootings.
