US needs to stop allowing dual citizenship, you are either American only or not.

Really sick and tired of this. I heard this during my time at LSU a lot. Some students with dual citizenships saying they have a backup in case Trump got elected, how they are able to reap the rewards of two systems, etc. It's divided allegiance and should not be allowed.
If you want to move here (LEGALLY) and become an American, you need to be an American only. You can't be American citizen and a British citizen, American citizen and a South Korean citizen, an American citizen and an Egyptian citizen, etc.. You need to fully assimilate and dissolve all citizenship, loyalty, and allegiance to a foreign nation and leader. There are many countries that already do this and we should do the same. How do you think these big shots have a window for tax evasion and other stuff of that nature?
Also for permanent residents who are not citizens, and I saw a lot of professors who do this. They've been in the US for 5, 6, 10, or more years and refuse to become citizens, yet keep working here. You either need to go through naturalization after a certain amount of time or GET OUT. Don't want to be a citizen? Fine. Go home then.

Some countries won't let you renounce citizenship so you are, by default, dual citizens.

Does the FLOTUS has dual citizenship?

Trump should start with his wife.
It doesn't seem to bother him.

What about people who are born overseas to American parents? This whole idea of undying allegiance is just silly.

this is dumb.
immigration would not even be an issue of the Democrats would agree to UPHOLD THE LAW that is currently on the books.

Well this is the dumbest Poli Board thread in at least 3 hours.

I really don't see an issue with it. As long as a person contributes to society and pays their taxes, it doesn't make a difference to me.

Technically, the US doesn't recognize dual citizenship. They will treat you solely as a US citizen regardless of other citizenship that you may possess. This is one of the reasons why the US taxes its citizens on worldwide income. If you're coming into the country, a US citizen must use his/her US passport. However, they do not disallow you from holding citizenship of another country (like some countries do). The US won't force you to renounce citizenship of another country. They just ignore any other citizenship that you may possess.

Throw in the Jews and you've got something.

And why is this a problem for our state or country? They have meaningful jobs, pay taxes, etc. Seems like a non-issue to me.

If was born just a year earlier I would have been a dual national by birth.
Sorry OP, but I would have worn that free college education in the EU to the ground.

I don't think the US recognizes dual citizenship. It's really a question of whether other countries allow it for US citizens.
I know it seems sorta like a distinction without a difference but...

Actually it's not really reaping any rewards other than being able to skip the visa process and own property/live in both countries. The downside is that if you are arrested in your 2nd country, the US state dept will cut you loose completely, as you are a citizen of the country you were arrested in. Personally I think it's a wash.
As far as divided allegiance: You have the same limits as non-citizens when it comes to clearance such as No-forn.

Not through dual citizenship. Actually, dual citizenship ensures they get taxed by the IRS, not helps them evade it.
And most people with dual citizenship have a parent or family in each country. It makes sense that they would have dual citizenship with a dad in Mexico and a mom in Florida, for ease of travel and life. We also only allow dual citizenship for certain countries. You cannot be a dual NK and US citizen.

Wrong again, and very common. Should Americans who retire to Mexico or Thailand be forced to get citizenship in those countries? How foolish to force them to drop their US citizenship and prevent any further US taxes from being collected.

I think you'd have less cases of this if the US did not tax its citizens on worldwide income. Only the US and Eritrea does this. Even if one ends up not paying US income tax from foreign tax credits, it's an extra burden of filing an extra income tax return (for some expats living abroad it can be complicated and costly just to file the return).
As an aside, FATCA is a terrible law that I was hoping the Trump administration would eliminate. It can make banking as a US citizen living abroad difficult.

It's divided allegiance and should not be allowed.
Besides, as LSUGrrrl pointed out, sometimes one can't just give up the citizenship. Even then, it's often a complicated and costly process. I'm not going to expect people to waste their time and money.

Of all things to have an issue with regarding our government, this is not one.
