Roger Goodell “The average NFL player lives five years longer than you,”

Roger Goodell was at the Jets facility on Monday and answered questions from fans at a forum with the team’s rookie safety Jamal Adams. While talking about improvements to player safety, the NFL commissioner downplayed the link between football and degenerative brain disease from concussions. “The average NFL player lives five years longer than you,” Goodell said. “So their lifespan is actually longer and healthier. And I think because of all the advancements, including the medical care, that number is going to even increase for them.”

“I think the one thing everyone agrees on is there’s an awful lot more questions than there are answers at this point,” Goodell said.
Reminds me of when he downplayed the positives of using marijuana LINK

Not really. This one is quantitative.
But is that a fact, did he offer the numbers?

I mean guys who stay in shape in their younger days live longer than the average obese American male? Nothing to see here.

Has it been proven that the average american is obese? Serious question.

He didn't. I believe it was directly following Jamal Adams comments.

Walked into a Wal Mart lately?
Also, I shy away from using South Louisiana as the benchmark of health in this country. Maybe I'm being too optimistic.

I'm not sold on the CTE issue yet because of the lack of control research. I'm not saying it's not real, I'm saying I'm not ready to decide either way until more data is available.
With that said, I don't think Goodell could these situations any worse. He just comes off as a pompous a-hole that won't concede anything about anything.

Very overweight, but not obese.
America is fat as frick. Its disgusting and a drain on our society.

I think overall, the numbers will prove him right but that's because the numbers include every nfl player....which means only 3 years of playing football, in average.
So playing football isn't what makes them live longer as he seems to insinuate

They undergo a lot of surgeries though. I was under the impression there was some statistical evidence that this may correspond with shorter lifespans down the road?
On the other hand, african american males have shorter lifespans than other races, so you have to take that into account in any study with NFL players who are predominately black.

Good point about the majority of players who don't last long most likely helping the numbers by avoiding injury and surgery.
It would have to be a very thorough study that is for sure.

Don't act like offensive lineman aren't obese. Average weight is 312 lbs. LINK
and most of them drop a lot of that weight once they stop playing

It's funny that Goodell gets shite on nonstop, but none of that shite ever trickles up to his employers.

Very rarely do fans hate owners in the NFL for some reason. I can't really remember the last time an owner got called out.
