Canada's Run Game

Watching the Pitt offense from last year, I could see us playing with 3 rb's a lot with Guice as the sweep man and DW/Brossette being used interchangeably at RB for dives and in the FB slot for misdirection opposite of sweep action especially at the goal line.
One negative is the number of negative plays that Pitt generated off the jet sweep either by having it blown up or by the qb dumping off backwards passes to the sweep man after play action. Another recurring negative was holding penalties with all of the action.
This is not a downhill running game, I'm curious to see if O steers Canada into becoming more direct as the season wears on because there will inevitably be some early season frustration I'm afraid. We have better players than Pitt but this offense will require our players to have a lot of discipline and faith in the unorthodox scheme.

They'll get it figured out, and they'll love it. Then, so will we...

One thing that does give me relief in the transition-
Canada could call our old offense with his eyes closed and it would be an effortless fallback in the possession game.

Guice will get 95% of the carries

If that happens we get a healthy Guice for 5 or 6 games tops.

The whole idea of a Canada O, is to keep the D guessing as to where the ball is going.
You would be a retard to give Guice 90% of the snaps, then the D could just forget about all the misdirection and just key on him.
BALANCE EQUALS OPPORTUNITY.

I think it's important to remember that Canada doesn't really have a "system" per se. He has always tailored his offenses to what personnel he has to work with

Which is what the best coordinators do.

With guys like Chark and Davis, I think you'll see a few more down the field shots than you saw at Pitt.

There are lots of games where you see the sweep get blown up but it still consistently pulls Linebackers out of position for the between the tackles stuff.
Not all plays work. Also we had a lot of success running sweeps in the past and running things off of sweeps.
I like it. Plus the sweep motion man opens up a lot of swing passes.

We have to take what you saw that pitt offense do with a grain of salt. We have more talented personel and a much bigger stronger o line. Any coach that can run up the middle get first downs at will, score touch downs, and grind clock is going to do that. I dont care who it is. So there will be a heavy blend of that with what you saw at pitt and his other stops. He will add a lot of motion and timing to the run heavy as well i think that should increase its effectiveness.

Canada ran plenty downhill with Conner. The sweep had success but when it was bottled up it opened up huge plays down the middle. It's not unorthodox at all. Similar shifts go way back. It's a simple offense that forces defenses to cover sideline to sideline all the time.

Seems to me that some posters are ignoring the difference in talent at the WR position. We should be able to open it up a bit more downfield than Pitt did with the talent we have out there.

Agreed. I'll admit it, the whole jet sweep offense (although can result in big yardage), scares me against SEC defenses. However, this really opens up the middle of the field for the tight end and leaves safeties vulnerable for the deep ball if they decide to spy on the tight end.

It's a con you accept for the pro of slowing down the defense's reaction time.

No you're just dumb, Guice will get the workload

Nah, if Canada's offense is as good as advertised, Guice will be sitting down after the first possession of the second half.

Ensminger's offense was great until the Bama game, granted they didn't have time to overhaul the entire offense during the interim gig.
Something had to change on offense and the way you attack teams. I do expect some growing pains and I think O is smart enough to adjust or maybe let the offense evolve. I think you probably see more traditional sets against BYU and you will see more of Canada's offense against Chattanooga the next weekend. As you get into SEC Play you can keep adding to the mix.
