We've considered it just to use their private schools and not pay the infidel surcharge

At our church, the surcharge is $300 per student and you have to contribute $400 per family to avoid it.

That's nothing. We have ours in a non Catholic school right now but the Catholic school tuition on average is a good bit less

I would imagine its much harder to get into a Catholic school not being catholic, correct?

I've been working with the RCIA program in our parish for the last 5 years. The parish pastor usually dictates how often candidates and catechumens can miss. Here, as long as you make a genuine effort to participate in some way, even if it's just calling ahead when you are going to miss, you'll be confirmed.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I went through it at St. Joseph downtown...we visited different parishes as part of the program, including St. Patrick's in New Orleans. Highly recommended...it was a great experience.

How lenient are the churches when we have to miss an RCIA class?

They are going to hold you accountable for attendance...you can't miss a bunch of them.

I lived in BR and did it at St Teresa of Avila church in gonzales because I liked the priest. Was a lot of commitment and travel though. Point is I think you can really do it anywhere you feel comfortable

I kind of like the sound of that.
I know the parochial vicar at St Aloysius, he's older but was ordained just a year ago. Very down-to-earth but good man, and holy priest. Most of the younger priests of the Diocese of Baton Rouge are strong.

Congratulations on your family's journey to be a part of the Catholic family.

I am a convert and was confirmed in 1987. I believe that the RCIA requires a Catholic Sponsor. I had one. The local Parish and diocese should be able to meet with you and provide someone to guide your family on the initiation. The time that is required for entry is about one year which usually culminates around Holy Thursday.

God bless your family and welcome to your new journey of Faith !
