Adding my 17yr old son to my esurance policy.
My rates jump from $271/month for me and wife to $935/month for all three of us?

Can I expect to get raped like this if I go shopping around?

Try Geico but yeah bend over. They know he will likely get in a significant wreck.

Teenagers, especially boys, are going to super expensive.

I'd suggest shopping around some places that have some programs that knock off fees for good grades and etc. Sometimes you can get a discount if they do driving school classes.

My parents didn't even entertain the idea of having me on their policy. I was on my own the minute I bought my first vehicle. I would have never wanted that burden on my parents.

That seems a bit outrageous. My insurance was about 200/month when I started driving.

Male/2door car.

Hell I'm paying 300/month now because I have a newer/nicer vehicle. Can't turn 25 fast enough.

You and your wife were already paying $664 per month?

Sounds like your son at $271 per is a good rate for the rest of the bad drivers in the family.

That's almost a $7000 a year jump. Can you post a bond in lieu of insurance? Check with the money board - they'll be able to figure it out for you.

Adding my kid was going to cost another $6,500/yr. We don't need 3 cars, so we just got 2 new really nice cars. Having 3 drivers and 2 cars droped his insurance to $1,500/yr.

Shop for a different agent. It's amazing what a new agent can "magically find" in savings for you. Even with the same company.

This is the rub with online insurance, an agent knows how to play the game.

Likely you need to not cover him on all vehicles, play with limits, etc.

I say this with zero affiliation with the insurance industry of any type.

Think about who does all the wrecking?

If your son makes it to 20 without a wreck, he'll be ahead of the curve.
no pun intended.

You do not say what your amount of coverage is, but yes.... $11k per year is bananas.

Assuming moderate to minimal limits, you could make a cash bond deposit to the state of $30k and be ahead of the game in less than 3 years (assuming no claims against you)

If I remember correctly, he has to be named as primary driver on one of your vehicles? If you have an inexpensive, old vehicle that's not financed, you could carry liability only & list him as primary on that. He would still be covered for all vehicles in the home. You would definitely want to confirm this with your insurer-it's been a while for us. Also, if that's your monthly premium for auto only, you definitely need to shop around unless you own a fleet.

I just did this for my son. I bought him an old 93 Jeep Wrangler and made him the primary driver of that, so we don't have to pay full coverage. My insurance went up $100 per month. Got discounts for good grades and drivers ed. My insurance is through USAA.

That is high, I think. Does he have a 3.0 gpa or above? Has he had Drivers Training? There is no way adding him as an occassional driver should spike your rates that much. My son has been a primary on a vehicle since he turned 16..the highest rate ever was in the $260 per month range and we carry 100/300 limits. The company I work for offers significant discounts for the gpa and drivers training I asked about earlier. Maybe that will help if he has those things. I'd check around some. Good luck.

Insurance is the reason I will never pay a note on a car. I avoid full coverage like the plague.

$270 for 2 adults sounds high to me, to start. We are paying $160 for a '16 4Runner and a '10 Odyssey.
