it actually is. I've moved away several times and always have made my way back. There is a soul to thbe city that other places just don't possess. Makes it an awesome place to live imo.

What, like a general apathy regarding basic conditions in a 1st world country? Not giving a shite about elementary concepts like timely/orderly waste disposal, repairing street surfaces, basic service industries getting shite done right and on time? Forgoing earnings potential and future prosperity in order to drink and eat out? Attracting no anchor industries outside of the service industry? Sign me up for some of that soul, baw!

I remember my parents taking us as children on day trips to the quarter in the early 90's and there would be poor black kids on every corner tap dancing with caps on their tennis shoes, or doing some other hustle for a few bucks.....we never felt unsafe and my parents never warned us to be careful..they would sit in the bar while we hung out in the street and fed the pigeons

Now, those poor black kids are robbing and knocking people out to steal their wallets instead of trying to earn an honest buck......I'll take my kids to the Quarter but we are very alert and aware of our surroundings. I wish it want like that but thats the world we live in now.

Come on now...sure 50 years ago music would apply...today the best we can get is some 40 yr olds playing in a cover band singing Smashing Pumpkin songs at the House of Blues.

If you are sitting here telling me people travel to NOLA for art and architecture.....well that disqualifies you from any further intelligent conversation.

NOLA isn't for everybody and that's fine. I just fail to understand the compulsive need some on here have to shite on a place they don't even live. Are you really that butthurt about the statues?

It was really depressing for me to drive into NOLA after coming home from vacation this year... you pass through Florida, Alabama, and then even Mississippi, everything's nice and clean, then when you come into New Orleans East, my god... it's like a 3rd world country.. disgusting and embarrassing

My brother and i drive back to louisiana every few years and we say the same thing. Youd swear certain parts of new orleans are 3rd world. Sad really!

For example: how many markets the size of New Orleans has 2 major pro sports teams?

I could probably cave on sport I guess....BUT neither of those teams are relevant historically in their leagues basically....unless you consider the Saints one of the worst teams historically in the NFL....then yea.

That's fine....but it doesn't change the fact that the one thing that people around country think about when they think New Orleans is Bourbon St....art, music, etc ain't why they think of Bourbon St either.

i mean having a team is better than not having a team. NOLA is the smallest market in the NBA and 2nd smallest in the NFL behind GB. That's punching above it's weight by definition

This could be applied to a whole host of other things

You can be and are though if you think anything different....NOLA has always represented itself above what it is from a tourism standpoint.

It is a fact that most people that travel to NOLA ultimate do so for the allure of debauchery and vices.....no question about it.

I hear what your saying, I would assume you're in your 20's, so yes, you and your friends only hear Bourbon St when you hear New Orleans....

Forget about all the cuisine, festivals, history and historic districts, Mardi Gras....etc

Ok

what do people think of when they hear St Louis? Probably the arch and thats it. Cleveland? Probably LeBron and that's it. Jacksonville? They probably don't think of anything at all.

Does that mean these places have nothing whatsoever to offer besides the caricature they are known for nationally?

How many "cultural meccas" are there in the US outside LA and NY? MAYBE a place like Austin? Maybe?

Because it's annoying how little of a shite people in NOLA give about bettering their situation. Didn't grow up there, but want to see the city do well as I have lineage that traces right through New Orleans and have plenty of family there. People in NOLA need to figure out ways to improve it into a livable city, that driven young LA people would want to live in, instead of saying "LOL Dallas?? Enjoy your strip malls!"

And in the process you go way to far the other way

NOBODY is suggesting NOLA doesn't have problems. That doesn't mean it's not great in other areas though.

Ok but do people not seriously see how silly they seem when they try to portray NOLA as place that people around the country don't see as simply Bourboun St. and what comes with it?

I mean hell people in NOLA vilify tourists (and how they portray NOLA) yet you are sitting here telling me the tourists that are villains are coming for art, architecture, and music ....crazy talk.
