This. I'm looking for a used car and the dealers are all over the 'private seller' site on Craigslist.

Walk away. Buy a truck from someone else.

Maggio is of the few good dealerships that I have encountered.
Good people, good trucks....a little far away from Baton Rouge though.

Do you even have a job with all this time on your hands? I hope you miss 3 days of work to save yourself $500. Dude the way to save money is to not be a douchebags. Be a good person and simply say when I find what I want I'm going to get it for what I want. Let them try to make money the first time and then give a firm offer.
HOW HARD IS THAT?!

I'm sorry but how are car salepeoples that offer a product that you yourself came to get after you research everything and visit multiple dealerships worse than any southern Baptist preacher with his hand in the pot, lawyer that holds your settlement for his building interest, doctor that knowingly wrongfully prescribes you so you'll come back.
The truth is, some car salespeople make 30k and some make 250k. The ones that make 250k are the ones you can trust and won't bullshite you. Greenpea new salespeople that don't know anything are manager puppets.
If you don't want b.s. then don't buy from a guy that has worked at more than 2 dealerships.
I was taught people want to buy from the one that sells the most.

this is what I'm willing to pay for yours. Can you make it work or not? Simple yes or no will suffice.
So you walk in playing the game, expecting to save a lot of money and bash them for playing the game and trying to make money?

Exactly.

At a Honda dealership, I showed the guy I have 800+ credit score, told him I want 0% financing, and $2000 off the price. Simple yes or no.
He came back and said they only finance thru Honda Financial and HF said my credit score was 680. (Which is pure bullshite that there's that big of a margin) Told me they could only take off $500 and it'd be 2.5% financing.
I reiterated what I wanted, and if I didn't get it, I was not buying the car. I hate debt and if I'm agreeing to go into debt, it's gonna be at the price I can afford, or else I simply won't buy.
6 hours later, I drove off in a new Honda with 0% financing and $2000 off.
Now why did it take 3 different salesmen, 25+ "I'll go talk to my manager" lines, and 6 hours of incremental lies for what should've been a 30 min purchase?

Wow that's some great company you're placing yourself in.
My answer, all of those are assholes.

Where else are people supposed to buy new cars?
I'd seriously rather buy another house than another car.

Seems like this would be a lot easier if you could just buy from the manufacturer.

It's been two years but I recall just getting the prices from all different sites with the understanding that they favored the dealer. Some sites showed the actual invoice price while others showed the holdback percentages for each manufacturer. When you look at the actual stickers you can see the costs of transportation and other fees that are negotiable. You can call the manufacturers for rebate info. There are a few other things you can do as well that will be found as you do the research.
There was the famous Will Cover method on TD which is helpful for many who want to WRONGLY start negotiating from the MSRP. I also recall 7th Ward Tiger sharing or helping people understand the different negotiable fees.

Jake any time a guy like you comes up, I'm starting at MSRP. Why would we not at least try? You get pissed when best buy tries to make $600 on a tv on You? Next time you go to Verizon when you buy that new iPhone and pay $1200 just know you are paying over $250 in negotiable fees that pay commissions.
And no I don't start everyone at MSRP, just a-hole that think my guys are bottom feeder scum because at the end of the day most of my guys probably have better houses and women than you.
90% of my deals are started at invoice.

I just abruptly leave when either the salesman or finance guy dicks around. It's just a car. Plenty of them to go around.

Dealer associations have successfully lobbied against this in most states. Tesla is fighting pretty hard though.

Sure. I have a job. But, I also have Saturdays and evenings off. I save far more than $500 dollars. I've bought Hondas, GMCs, a Corvette, Chevys and except for the Lexus, I've always gotten far under invoice. Lexus does not really negotiate, they obviously don't have to.
I am a good person when I go in. But, folding because it makes people like you have an easier time is not being a "good person." Negotiating back and forth at different dealerships gives me a better picture of what's true and what's BS. You find the "nice guy, glad-handing" salesperson at the previous dealership was full of crap.
How about you and your peers stop being the douchebags? How hard is that?

You are accurate in your comparison of car salesmen to the very worst of those professions.
