Wasn't it J.C. Penneys that once tried to change their model to get rid of sales, coupons, discounts, etc? It was an utter failure. The majority of the population is too lazy (and stupid if I'm not playing nice nice) to realize when they are getting a good deal.
Although it isn't my style, the mark it up to mark it down game is the most profitable.

Absolutely not. You should hear the way the customer is talked about behind the scene in most businesses.
But, that dealer has himself and a lot of employees to also worry about. A business can't stay open at the margins that you stated. That's why they play hide the ball with you and bust the frick out of sweet granny's arse when she comes to get her Grand Caravan.

Obviously my profession is in my username. My dealership has 6 of 13 salespeople that has graduated college, two of the other are former athletes and two of the others are former marines. There is great money to be made and for the most part they are good people. Yes every lot has a douchebags or two that ruin the name for most but at the end of the day they are normal people with normal lives. I've bought several cars before working for Ford and I went in and said what I wanted, they pulled it up or we walked to it and drove it, I liked it and bought the Damn thing for a good price. You see the value, you pay the value.

I am an I.T. administrator for an Automotive Group of 15 new car dealerships and an RV store. I eavesdrop a lot. My brother sales cars for one of the dealerships and has been the top salesman company wide most months.
There is a salesman/management shuffle in every city. There are a lot of slime balls in the business. If you can turn cars (sales) or good numbers and percentages (F&I) you can get away with murder.
Profit can be slim. The difference in an invoice amount and MSRP is generally under $1500. Incentives and manufacturer cash is where a lot of money comes from.
They will go down to making nothing if they need to sell a car. They will break it off in your arse if you take the first pencil.

Also, our internet department has a process that has every customer that comes in ask for a manager. I'm generally the one that is asked for and I walk up and greet the customer. The reason I'm saying this is because for the amount of douchebags and tough guys commenting in this thread, I can honestly say that I can count on one hand how many of people like you come in every month. My point being, I bet most of you are full of shite.

Just like in any business. We pay 1000% markup on shite everyday but when it comes to a car they want to pay 70% of cost. fricking people over with 10% markup on a car has been over with for 20 years.

At our Kia dealership, A LOT of customers are just happy the dealership can get them in a new ride. Ford/Chevy/GMC customers are generally decent people to work with. Mazda and VW customers are weird. Brand and location plays a big role.
I love working in the car business. I could make a lot more if i sold as opposed to being the I.T. guy, but I don't have to deal with the BS. My brother gets out around 30 a month. He has been in the top 50 nationally in new Kia sales the last two years. frickers gets some nice vacations on Kia's dime.

Had one try this nonsense, I just got loud and verbally abusive in front of the other customers and they miraculously found my keys. My wife was horrified until I explained afterwords because that is not the way I normally deal with folks, just hate lying conniving assholes.
Sad thing is I had bought from them before and would have likely done so again many times by now without this nonsense.
Being unable to come to a mutually agreed upon deal is one thing and we can walk away on good terms, that BS is something else entirely.

I agree with you on that. Hiding keys and back and forth are for the birds. I have my salespeople have the customer bring their car around and walk around it with the used car manager, and never touch the keys. We drive maybe 2 cars a month that we appraise and sell 150-220 cars a month. You can't get anywhere in a market like baton rouge without 100% customer service.

I can guarantee you I'm not full of shite. It honestly baffles me the amount of incompetent employees dealerships have.
If a customer comes in and says I want a, b, and c can you make it work or not? Why is it a long drawn out bullshite process? I don't need a manager like yourself to come over and shake my hand acting like you're "going to take care of me". Give me a yes or no and let's move on. Absolutely cannot stand the car business model.

Your business is an absolute necessity. Any frick off the street can sell cars. What we're complaining about is inflated sense of entitlement, arrogance and self worth many car salesmen display. You don't actually have to sell me on anything. Quit bullshitting me and give me what I want. Or don't and let me be on my way.

You would be surprised to know how many car salesmen are ex convicts. One guy I know who had just gotten out got hired and in 6 months made sales manager.

I wouldn't be surprised. Dealers like to hire people who won't have any ethical dilemmas with doing what it takes to make money.
If youre uneducated, have a rough criminal record, and would be willing to make a lick off your cousin, aunt, preacher, or neighbor...then this might be your best chance in life to make 6 figures.

Maybe on the smallest compact car with the lowest trim package. This wouldn't be the case for SUV's or trucks. There are thousands of dollars in profit built into those, which is why they can advertise thousands of dollars in discounts. If you pay their discounted price, they are still making good money off of your sale.
