Heartbreaking when you hook into a big fish and it's not what you're after

Friday afternoon I was dragging a frog across some grass and a big fish exploded on it. Hook set was solid and it felt like a good one. Got him to the boat ready to celebrate and it was a damn choupique. Same thing happened to me in Toledo Bend a couple months back during the spawn. Got to be one of the worst feelings there is.

Slam em against the side of your boat so they won't break your heart again.

Last weekend I somehow snagged a 30lb gar. I thought it was a slot red until I brought it up next to the boat. I may have shed a tear or two when it surfaced.

I was tunna fishing one time and caught a sailfish...... I was pretty happy about that one.

Happens to all fishermen, but still stings a little every time.

No, I catch and release 90% of the time.

I have never eaten choupique anyway. Is it as good as bass and sacalait?

Nothing you can do except shake your head in disgust. And beat the hell out of the choupique with a cypress club

Taste the same as mud and feels like sand in your mouth

This is what I heard. Growing up I was always told it was a trash fish.

Anyone thats says its trash and taste like mud or sand is either lying or they cant cook worth a shite. Keep it alive, not on ice. Filet it, batter it, and go straight to the grease. I promise its good. In a courtbouillon its good also.

Nothing is as good as sacalait, but it's not bad.
Better than spec

Sacalait is at the top but there are times when I would trade a whole ice chest of them away to get some choupique. Imo its one of the best eating fish there is.

Or when you're reeling in a snapper and the rod gets real fricking heavy. Got damn sharks.

It's better than bass and sacalait but totally different - not apples to apples at all.
It will get mushy if not cooked fresh in my experience though.
