quote:

Brown says there’s always been a racial element to the way Cajuns were treated by other whites in Louisiana.

“They lived in these very rural areas and the Klan didn’t like them because they were Catholic or they were mixed [race] and so there were narratives around Southern prejudice. My grandmother talked about that.… It’s a difference between the ‘high yellow’ in New Orleans — or the passing white — versus the people [of color]. Since we’re on this topic, even a phrase that’s so fascinating to me, to this day, is I will meet people from Texas who will immediately just call me a coonass. I just look at them and say, ‘You’re not my people and I don’t know you that well. You can’t call me that.’ The linguistic legend behind that phrase is… that folks just couldn’t understand [Cajuns], these folks were a little dark skinned, they spoke with an accent. It’s a completely racist term … there’s an underlying racism that exists.”

Like other minorities, Cajuns faced a bureaucratic state indifferent to their desire to retain their culture. Bent on assimilation, the government insisted that their children be taught in English, not their native Cajun French. “They forced them to speak English at school but they would all speak Cajun French outside of school. My grandparents spoke Cajun French until their death. They spoke English for others.”

WE CAJUNS CAN NOW CLAIM MARGINALIZATION AND CALL OTHERS RACISTS FOR NO REAL REASON

Like many here, I'm first generation Cajun. My grandparents on both sides of my family didn't learn to speak English until their teens. Yes, you read that correctly. All of them grew up poor. I was the first person in my family to go to college, etc.

My grandfather on my mom's side ended up being a WW2 vet, etc.

When it came to politics, my grandparents were always Rs because of the harsh treatment they received from Democrats growing up. They treated blacks and poor Cajuns the same. My grandfather went to his grave never understanding why every black person he was close too his entire life, through the war, etc, voted for the very party that spend years discriminating against them.

I could get on a soapbox about this, but I'll spare everyone. LOL

My grandparents on my mom side spoke French and were from Napolianville. My great great grandparents on my dad's side are from Vicenza Italy. 23 and me tells me I'm 40% British. I was born and raised Catholic so I know the KKK doesn't like me.

Help me find my victim group, please.

Coonass comes from the french slang term conasse, which roughly translated means "stupid bitch." Cajuns used to call eachother that as a joke/term of endearment, sort of like blacks calling eachother the N word. English speakers transposed it to "coon arse," and a legend was born.

Hmmm. I've lived in South and North Louisiana. I can't say I ever experienced "racism". At least I haven't from other whites, protestant or not. Now blacks on the other hand...... I don't need this count making me into some kind of "victim".

Yet I have a sneaking suspicion that she would call the good folks of NLA and other parts of the south "redneck" and stereotype them too without a second thought.

Only my mother's side of the family is Cajun (White Castle, Bayou Pigeon, Pierre Part) with my great-grandfather being straight-off-the-boat Sicilian.

According to Ancestry DNA I'm also 25% Irish.

Do I qualify as a victim?
