Baseball Prospectus releases its mid-season Top 50 Prospects list

3 Dodgers on the list: Walker Buehler (19), Alex Verdugo (27), and Yadier Alvarez (28)

1. Yoan Moncada, 2B, Chicago White Sox
Why He’ll Succeed: Moncada is a true five-tool player, with potential plus or better grades in all five slots. Slot that in at an up-the-middle-spot, throw in a dash of 70-grade pop, and you have the recipe for a perennial all-star.
Why He Might Fail: Moncada may end up more of a four-tool player, and when the missing tool is hit, the profile can get volatile. There’s potential for a lot of swing-and-miss here, and while a .230 or .240 hitting second baseman with pop is still a regular, it’s not an impact one. There’s also more true ‘bust’ potential than you’d like as your number one prospect, but hey, we put a pitcher who immediately blew out at one preseason. Risk doesn’t bother us.
2. Amed Rosario, SS, New York Mets
Why He’ll Succeed: Rosario is a plus shortstop glove with plus-plus speed, and the bat has continued to develop. He’s a potential five-tool shortstop and only slots in behind Moncada because of varying reports on the ultimate power projection.
Why He Might Fail: The Mets may never call him up? Well, they will call him up eventually, where his unusual hand path—though it’s less unorthodox than it used to be—and aggressive approach may struggle against major league stuff and sequencing. The glove and speed should keep him in the lineup regardless though.
3. Francisco Mejia, C, Cleveland Indians
Why He’ll Succeed: Mejia barrels everything and has shown power from both sides of the plate. He’s a potential 7 hit, 5 pop catcher, and he’s improved enough defensively to make us confident he sticks as a backstop.
Why He Might Fail: We’re pretty confident Mejia is a catcher. If we were positive Mejia is a catcher, he’d have a good case for number one. His smaller frame might not hold up under the rigors of a 120-game major league catching assignment, making him more of a C/DH type. Bat could play there too though.

I feel like Moncada has been in the top five for a long time but is taking forever to actually become an everyday guy.

Big drop for Torres following the injury also surprised Frazier isn't on the list. I mean he has only been called up for like 4 days unless I missed him

We'll see if the Cubs hang on to Jimenez

Just realized Leody made the list.
I feel like a lot of A guys don't typically make lists like this.

Alvarez must have super electric stuff to still be this high through his struggles this year

Didn't realize what kind of year Mejia is having at AA. I hadn't seen him this high anywhere but that explains it

2 Astros on the list.
Tucker at 14
Whitley at 45.

Yep. Refining his control and developing an off-speed pitch will be the keys for him. He's only 21, so I like his chances. Julio Urias is out until about August 2018, but I could see Urias, Alvarez, and Buehler in the rotation by 2019. Buehler may actually crack the rotation next year, along with Brock Stewart, Throw in Kershaw, Alex Wood, Stewart, and maybe Mitchell White, Amani Abdullah, Jordan Sheffield, and Dustin May and there's some real depth and talent there.

I think buehler is getting fast tracked and he may end up in LA as early as next year

Cardinals have 4 on the list, Dodgers have 3 on the list as well.
Impressive, considering Both have been good for many years, and neither TANKED to get prospects. They drafted in the late 20's and kept building their farm systems.
Cardinals are loaded with Pitching prospects, with a few tier 1's, with a couple other moving into that list.
But, Management has pissed away assets. I have ZERO faith they could use some assets to bring in a big bat.

And the Dodgers have graduated numerous amounts of top 50 guys in recent memory as well. Pederson, seager, urias, bellinger

I see Espinoza didn't make the list for San Diego.

I was surprised about Frazier too. What happened to Mateo? Did I miss something with him?

Came across this scouting report on Alvarez on Fangraphs:
quote:
60 FV Prospects
1. Yadier Alvarez, RHP Video
Signed: July 2nd Period, 2015 from Cuba
Age 21 Height 6’3 Weight 175 Bat/Throw R/R
Tool Grades (Present/Future)
Fastball Slider Curveball Changeup Command
60/70 50/60 40/50 40/60 40/55
Relevant/Interesting Metrics
Recorded 34.6% strikeout and 6.9% walk rate at Low-A.
Scouting Report
The ease with which Yadier Alvarez delivers 100 mph fastballs is as unsettling as it is beautiful. Triple-digit fastballs are becoming more common but they usually involve significant visible effort. Alvarez throws 95-plus and looks like he’s settling down to take a nap. He’ll touch 101 and generally sits 96-99 and 94-97 later in starts. His fastball command is below average, as Alvarez has issues maintaining his delivery’s timing and struggles to get on top of his fastball consistently. But the grace in the delivery and Alvarez’s overall athleticism point toward significant development in this area and there are signs that it’s already begun to come. Alvarez cut his walk rate in half after moving from the Arizona League to the Midwest League while his strikeout rate held firm. Scouts who saw him late in the year complimented his ability to throw strikes, something he wasn’t doing consistently as late as June.
Alvarez’s secondaries are also a work in progress but all enjoy substantial projection. His best is a slider in the 82-86 mph range, which should at least be plus at maturity and flashes above that right now. He was tinkering with a curveball during extended spring training that I thought had above-average potential, but it was raw and ran together with his slider quite a bit in my looks. Alvarez’s changeup is well below average but, again, this is exactly the kind of arm that merits changeup projection because of the athleticism, ease in the delivery, arm speed and… well, everything about it. It may come late, but there’s a plus potential changeup in there.
There’s also blatantly obvious risk. Alvarez is young, raw and throws astoundingly hard which all present potential pitfalls. But this combination of body, delivery, arm strength and impact breaking ball is the stuff young aces are made of and the ceiling here is immense. I think this is one of the highest upside arms in the minor leagues.
KATOH+ Projection for first six years: 2.8 WAR

Yea I saw that this winter. It seems like every time someone talks about him, they are shocked but how easy he makes his pitches look

What happened to Mateo?
Dude is 22 and hitting .472 in AA (he was struggling at A advanced this year though)
.267/.322/.447 between A advance and AA

Not sure what caused the fall? He is still top 3 prospect in the yanks system

He has struggled no doubt but he and Frazier should still be in the top 50
