I just reread the article, and there is never a mention of just 3 Brits. In the entire course of the story, the only use of "three" in any way:
Also, keep the numbers in mind as you read this:
Again- SBS team is generally 16 men. No casualties that took one out of the fight, so that number remained (assuming it was a full team, and we don't have any reason to think it wasn't).
If they were encircled, that spreads the ISIS guys completely around them. You take 20 out, that leave 30 men spread around 16.
A group rush is actually going to give the numbers advantage to the SBS team... there's no sense in rushing a massed area when you could kill 3 guys and break out. You're not surrounded if you have open avenues to escape, so the ISIS guys were spread thin.
So the SBS guys rushed an area enmasse, and killed those there and any ISIS guys who converged to close the gap. The other ISIS guys saw the odds dwindling, and wanted no part of an even fight.

another Brit soldier killed three militant thugs using his rifle as a club
Also, keep the numbers in mind as you read this:
quote:
being outnumbered and encircled after being ambushed by around 50 ISIS fighters
quote:
After killing at least 20 of the terrorists, the elite group realised they had around 10 bullets left between them

while charging the remaining 30 ISIS thugs
