Cap room available now that Fairley has been shelved?

What kind of cap room do we have now that Fairley will sit out this year?
I'd like to sign 2 DL FA's in his place.
Are we still taking a small hit for him and what do we save?

His number has eaten up a lot of our cap.

I doubt we sign another DT(wouldn't complain if we did though). We already have 4 guys that are likely to make the roster...Rankins, Davison, Onyemata, & McDaniel. We may have the room to do it if we consider Onyemata as a DE though.
We also have Ashaad Mabry, Justin Zimmer, & Devaroe Lawrence that could make some noise in the preseason.

He's on the shelf but his money is on the books. Sooooo.....

So he gets his full salary? Wow!
Can they cut him and re-sign him later?
I find it hard to believe he gets full contract. I'm sure we're taking a lesser hit...

I thought next year his base went up but this year was only like 1m?

We would have enough backup money if morestead was getting paid like a rapper

He had up to $2m over the course of his contract in sack-based incentive money. If they were likely to be earned (i.e. 6.5 sacks or less), then we may free up ~$500k next season. I don't see any money being freed up this season.

If Morstead's vehicle was broken down on the side of the road & he was looking for a ride...would you pick him up?

Outside of suspension, when a player is under contract they are paid their entire contract. Fairley is only counting $3M against the cap this year. If they were to cut him, he would count $9M against the cap. Obviously, it will be cheaper to just keep him on the roster and hope he's able to return next year. If he never plays another down and retires, there could be some recovery; but I do not know all the rules about how that works.

Thanks! Very helpful. Not as bad a hit as I thought.
They are obviously making the right move...

I remember reading that the staff was pretty high on Justin Zimmer's ability. He could definitely be a dark horse

being on the non-football injury list is different.

I think it would go to arbitration under the CBA. Reportedly have a medical opinion that he can't play again, so saints may argue retirement provisions apply.
either way, I expect the saints to void the contract, take it to arbitration, and at least get SOME cap relief. I highly doubt Fairly gets the full guaranteed portion either. His lawyer and agent should settle with the team for something of a discount.

Yep, he's one of the guys that I'll be keeping an eye on.
