What does it mean to be American? - Mayor Broome et al responds

The Advocate ran a piece today where they went out into the community and asked "What does it mean to be an American?"
They went to Mayor Broome for a response. Here is an opportunity to talk about the greatest country in history, to serve as a role model for the citizens of the city she runs, to elicit hope on the eve of the Fourth of July. What does she talk about? Race.
She sounds like this guy.
Why does our Mayor/President sound more like a rapper than a leader or businessperson? Meanwhile, you get great responses like this.
But easily the best of all. This guy nails it.
Typical old white conservative guy that the Advocate accidentally included you say?
Clay Young, entrepreneur and owner of a local advertising and marketing firm. I vote for this guy next go around.

quote:
East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome, 61: “The celebration of the independence of this country makes us understand that we have to bridge the differences between us and provide opportunity for everyone. We must meet the promise of those who created this great nation — that there will be liberty and justice for all. That’s the work of every American, no matter where they live, no matter who they are. Happy Fourth of July.”

quote:
Marcel P. Black, 33, rapper/activist: “Independence Day is supposed to commemorate freedom from our colonizers — something I feel that black people haven't truly experienced all the way yet. What happened to Walter Scott, Tamir Rice, Sandra Bland, Philando Castile and Alton Sterling shouldn't happen to people who are viewed as free American citizens. Until these things are remedied, I'll only wonder what it is to be fully American on July 4.”

quote:
Joe Judy, 38, owner The Collective: “It’s freedom, right? I guess we have more freedom than most countries. The press, that’s a good thing. Freedom of the press, freedom of speech. I guess the Constitution and its amendments basically wrap up what it is to be an American.”
quote:
Rev. Lee Wesley, 73, pastor at Community Bible Baptist Church: “First of all, the freedom to worship as we choose. The freedom to pursue our goals in life without interference from our government. The right to assemble. Even though we have some problems in our country, it is still the greatest country on the face of the Earth.”
quote:
Rose Hudson, 53, CEO of Louisiana Lottery: “I know we live in a time of heightened conflict and challenges in this country, but part of the beauty of who we are is that we get to have these conversations. We get to participate in discourse and have an impact on the future of our nation.”
But easily the best of all. This guy nails it.
quote:
Clay Young, 41, owner of Clay Young Enterprises: “To me, being an American means you have an opportunity to create your own outcome, but as an American, opportunity is what is guaranteed. Outcome should not be.”

SWB doesn't know anything but identity politics, so that's what she's gonna stick to. She's completely incompetent but she's the most aggrieved and that's all that counts.
She literally has never given an interview or a speech where her skin color or sex wasn't the main topic.

I don't understand how this is such a controversial thing to say in many instances. It's 100% correct.

Every time I see her initials (SWB) I immediately think of Sewerage & Water Board. I guess that's because both stink and are full of shite.

I'm will to go out on a limb and say that Clay and Gravy are not best of friends.

I was expecting what she said to be worse based off of her history and the thread title. Not that I want to defend that crazy bitch, but it didn't sound that bad.

I hope people realize that, once you eliminate the ghetto and the activists/politicians, most blacks have more in common with Clay Young.
My town is about 75% black. I see rebel flags around town, sometimes displayed in a provocative way, and no one cares. The black men who work in the oil field (and I see quite a few) have nothing in common with the Gary Chambers types.
Our Mayor had to fill a temporary position on the city council and intentionally filled it with a white woman because "an all black council sends the wrong message to businesses."
The media stirs this up for ratings, but it is an activist, politician and media driven debate. If this trio of trouble would shut up for a month, you'd find that we have far more in common with the people in Texas who found a way to get that young working black man a car than we do with the agitators.
