Tony Allen is so fun to watch. Amazing athlete, just so bad at the offensive side.

quote:Thanks. Looks like PBev give up a % 1.3% higher than league average too.
NBA.com -> Stats -> Defensive Dashboard
But I think everyone would still acknowledge that he's really, really good defensively.

I had a though that FG% may be less important than FGA, thinking a great defender would give up less attempts per game.
But Beverly gives up more shot attempts per game than Paul, if I'm reading it all correctly.
So for the OP, does that suggest Beverly is a bit overrated, or that CP3 is actually darn good?

Didn't realize he had that long of a streak going. Impressive.

Yes I was against the Lawson signing, I know my CC pretty good and didn't think it'd work. This would work better than that. But not enough to take down GSW.

As unreliable as they can be he's consistently been near the top of the list for defensive impact stats (drpm, on/off, bpm, etc.) among guards.
And it's not like he's just gambling to pick up a bunch of steals. He has incredibly quick hands and anticipation and his stout build and quick feet allow him to even match up against bigger guys sometimes.

Defensive guys like Beverly are often good for a few years and then ride that reputation to a slew of awards. Kobe is a great example.
Beverly is probably a bit overrated as a defender. His on/off is only slightly better and his FG% allowed is mediocre.
Defended FG% vs expected FG% is a nice stat when you look at the starters in the NBA. It is basically a who's who of defensive powers with few surprises.

quote:His positioning and anticipation set him apart. Much like on the offensive end, he's just so smart and tends to know most everything that is going on around him, he's just a step ahead of most others on the court in terms of what's going on.

quote:Yea, when I saw Paul's numbers, I assumed Beverly's would either be better or he'd give up less shot attempts. I was surprised to see he gave up more shot attempts and was slightly worse.

I don't know about that, especially for guards. Klay measures great but the rest of the top guys are Jason Terry, Jrue Holiday, Dion Waiters, Vince Carter, etc.

When you sort by starters, and look at guys with substantial games play, say 60 or more, it's still pretty solid.
Jrue Holiday had a DFG% 4.1% lower than would be expected, and his on/off defensive rating was 5.0 better when he was on the court. That's a pretty damn good year.

I love looking at it but I don't think it tells the full story. Go back and look at last year, the top 4 were JJ Redick, Jeff Teague, Dragic, and Steph and Redick's -5.7 makes him look like a transcendent defender.

It's not perfect.
Redick had a really good year though. His defensive rating supports the field goal percentage he allowed.

Just saying that the turnover from year to year with the guards is pretty high, forwards and centers a lot more consistent. I'm definitely in with the line of thinking that are probably only 2 or 3 actual impactful defenders at guard.
