This does not bother me in the least.
Am I "mean" to have this thought?

Good.
Fwiw I believe that all drugs should be legal. We should really let nature take its course.

To be perfectly honest I don't really care what happens to junkies but I would like it to be treated as a medical issue as opposed to a criminal one. Now treated with government subsidized insurance? I'm not so sure. I have military insurance and it was a pain in the arse for me to get treatment a few years ago. Not sure why we should roll out the red carpet for everyone else.

I'm all for recognizing that drug addiction is an illness and a cureable one!
We have a long way to go as a nation in the rehabilitation process for addicts.
That being said, it shouldn't be covered under your healthcare or healthcare that is govt subsidized. That's a recipe for disaster.

Let's not get them the help they need or anything.

Let's assume that this healthcare plan is the only possible way anyone can help them. Its not like there are non-profits out there or anything...
Its not like anyone except the government can improve life or anything...

Heaven forbid their family or dare say, the addict themselves should shoulder the burden to pay for their own care. Why am I punished because some drunk or druggie can't say no?

Good. Opiod addicts have been getting to much "healthcare" anyway. Root cause of their problem.

If you ever get in a wreck, get cancer, pneumonia, or anything else that requires medical care I'm assuming that you'll be primarily relying on family and your own funds before tapping into any sort of insurance, because why should anyone else be punished?

Cancer is a fricking illness.
Opiod addiction is a goddamn choice.
frick'em.
And that includes family members.

I'm shouldering the burden for my own insurance policy. I'm dont expect someone else to pay for my rehab, thus I don't take drugs or drink myself into a stupor. Give all you want to a druggie, but don't use the long arm of the government to reach into my pocket.

Doesn't matter. Because it won't pass anyway.

This pertains to aid to the states for dealing with the opiod crisis and its a major sticking point for moderate Republicans like Portman.
