Why does the US cling to a two-party system?

The 2 party system has a number of problems. It forces disparate ideological groups to hold their noses and stick together despite the fact that they disagree on many things. People are forced to vote for platforms they don't fully support. It feeds the nasty polarization in the country today by creating the good vs. evil dichotomy (one both sides). It reflects political tribalism at its worst.
Why has a centrist party never been able to get off the ground? I remain convinced that the wide middle is where most voters reside. France just elected a president from a 2-year-old center-left party (let's ignore for the moment that the dude is an incomprehensible boob). But he was clearly a legitimate compromise candidate between a far righty and a far lefty.
So what's the answer? Is it because the people with the money don't want to risk it on a startup? If there was a legit center-right party in America, I wold join it tomorrow.

Trump is third party president

Because at heart they like it and demonize everything else

why do people blame the media? ... americans are intellectually lazy and want 1 person/office to solve all their problems ...

Because that is the least amount required to give people a "choice".

Go form another successful party and get back to us.

That's a scapegoat, the people enjoy being manipulated. So long as there's an other side to be against they enjoy being angry.

It's a great question and I have no idea what the answer is. It's obviously a disaster though.

Because the two parties will do anything to keep it that way.

Because you're either for Trump or your a liberal pos. Only need 2 options.

easier to control two parties than 3 or 4 or so on.

The right moves farther right as a result of the left constantly moving the goal posts. Conservative people don't have substantially different views than they did a few decades ago. The same can't be said about the left.

There is no two party system, there is only the bank.

Liberals would love a 3 party system. Liberals will never split. But having conservatives split will get libs back in charge and eventually a one party system.

No one is clinging to anything. It's not a choice made by the public. It's a fundamental consequence of a single member district, first past the post, winner take all electoral system. This is an established fact, like conservation of momentum - not an opinion. It's like 1 + 1 = 2. Political Science 101. If you want to have more than one political party, you HAVE to change the way our elections function on a basic level. We functionally cannot have a viable 3rd or 4th party in our electoral system. We can have a 3rd party emerge and REPLACE one of the existing 2, but one cannot come about and survive alongside them for more than a couple cycles. It's a functional consequence of how we structure voting here. To get multiple viable parties we'd have to switch to another system, like proportional representation.

I used to think voting 3rd party was "throwing my vote away". I realized in these last primaries that voting republican or democrat was throwing my vote away. That's why I voted 3rd party in November and I won't be voting democrat or republican ever again.
Neither party gives a shite about anyone but the highest bidder lining their pocket. And Trump isn't any better. He just got tired of bribing politicians and decided to cut out the middle man.
When is the last time a politician truly represented their constituents and not special interest groups?
