Multifactorial:
Mound was not right - really is his job to adjust pre-game
Rain
Emotions
A few very close calls that didn't go his way

He'll bounce right back

I love Poche.. Don't get me wrong. I think his problem is between the ears. I saw him pitch in the CWS opener in 2015. He was cruising until something went wrong. I think it was an error. He immediately fell apart. I think it is a pattern.

I hope he gets out of it. I want the kid to do well.

It was a lot like his start in Omaha. He looked flat out dominant, had a bad break, then couldn't right the ship. I'll bet he can't wait to get out there and exorcise those demons.

I hope he gets the chance.

Don't kill the messenger, since Poche gave up his first run, his ERA has been slighy over 5.

I hadn't thought of this, but it does make some sense. falling literally flat on your face in front of a stadium full of people has to have some effect on the steadiest of pitchers. I was kinda hoping to see him smirk or laugh at himself a little when he got up....he didn't.

He absolutely did. That wasn't the issue.

think going into Omaha, you start off with Walker Game 1, Lange Game 2, and Poche in Game 3. The reason being is the first ga

Agree to disagree on this.

You absolutely start your best pitcher against FSU. You take no chances of possibly having to battle out of the losers bracket, and it will give Lange more opportunities to pitch throughout the rest of the week if you win.

And any game at the CWS, including the first one is way more pressure packed than the SEC Tourney, even the tourney Championship game.

Didn't Bertman say that game 2 was the "marble" game, which was more of the must win game? If i could find some credible sources on this, and with that in mind, you would start your "ace" so to speak on game 2. I wouldn't be surprised to see a Peterson type in game 1, Lange game 2 (assuming we may see Oregon state tree huggers). I'm gonna go find that Bertman interview.

Yeah I think he smiled about it but that doesn't mesn it wasn't in his head - if I slip and fall on my face the first thing I'm thinking about is not having it happen again to avoid injury - that alone will cause a pitcher (or anyone throwing a ball) to alter their step and throwing motion.

I'm going to be polite here...

Bertman may have mentioned a similar strategy for a regional when your first game is a 4 seed, some automatic bid from a small conference who really doesn't have much of a shot. But Bertman, nor any sane person, would ever start a midweek starter in game 1 of the CWS when all 3 of your weekend starters are good to go.

But think of how stacked our pitching would be for the loser's bracket.

May be unpopular but CPM should consider starting him vs FSU. He's good enough to take them on Would much rather have Lange vs Oregon St

you woefully underestimate FSU man, esp if they pitch their ace. the CWS ain't the regional; every team there is damn good. the aggies are the worst team in Omaha and they beat us 2 out of 3 at the Box.

the first game is the most important. being in the loser bracket right off the bat is not the way to win that tournament.

Poché was 1-2 on that batter who eventually hit the HR. I thought there he got too cute with trying to get him to chase 2 curveballs that weren't close. Then you have to make a pitch that's a little too meaty. Kid blasts it. I felt like if Poché challenges that batter in the 1-2 count that inning winds up very different.
