Offshore advice

So my real good buddy just took home a 35 foot everglades over the weekend. We went to pick it up on Friday and sea trial and fill out the paper work. Friday and Saturday were two full days of running the boat and figuring things out as neither of us have ever ran anything that big. His last boat was a 27 triton bay boat that was traded in so we could get as far as we want to go offshore.
With all this said we are mainly inshore guys and still have our training wheels on when it comes to offshore fishing. The ultimate end goal is to be able to run out to beer can or ram powel or the likes of those rigs and get onto some yellowfin. Keep in mind we are running from his house in destin as that is where the boat is in the lift.
What are some good resources for information and if their are any tips on rigging, catching bait, Or really any aspect of offshore I would be all ears.

Take someone who knows what they are doing with you the first many trips.
Make sure you have epirb etc. Long offshore runs are a totally different game than inshore. Thehulltruth.com can be a good resource as well

- Epirb
- life raft
- Hiltons subscription
- xm weather on the boat
- as guy above said, go to Half Hitch in Destin and ask about paying someone (preferably a licensed captain) to go with you at least once
- sat phone or spot indicator are nice
Running in and out of Destin pass, be aware of outgoing tide and strong wind blowing out of south...that could be the most dangerous part of your trip.

Yeah. In full disclosure it's my buddies dads boat but his dad has no plans to go offshore. We have a sat phone, and an epirb will most likely be obtained before any serious offshore trips are done. Right now just trying to run the boat and make short state waters snapper trips and the like.
Already have hiltons subscription. Obviously since we are asking these questions we are still in the learning stage of that.
Plus if anyone has any tips for shorter 30 mile off trips that would be good test hits would be super appreciative. Not necessarily specific spots but rigging and techniques.
We may possibly be able to have a fulltine captain come with us a few times to show us the ropes but that sounds like a long shot since he is someone's personal fulltine captain and that person may not want to share. Although my friends dad is good buddies with the guy who employs the captain you just never know.

Just take someone with experience along to show you the ropes. Doesn't have to be a capt.
I know plenty of experienced fishermen that would gladly take a free trip in exchange for showing you the ropes

Go to fishingdestin.com or something like that...it has a link to public numbers from near shore to offshore. Good site

Yeep read through almost that entire site plugged in most of the public reefs into gps. Most of which were already on garmin map but now we have waypoints. Mainly stuck to plugging in instate water stuff since Saturday we were mainly wanting to do a small trip to test the boat.
Learned a few good things. Mainly that fishing these public reefs can be tough because they get fished so hard but it's doable but seems like it requires 40lb mainline and a 30lb flourish leader Carolina rig. Now we know. This is the kind of stuff that I can't wait to learn and be able to put to use. Boat near us pulled in what looked like a real nice Cobia.

If you know any in the destin area. I am very sure my buddy would be open if they really know what they are doing.

You got HMS permit for boat?
Posted on 6/11/17 at 6:07 pm to Timmayy
How do you stand on offshore fishing gear? Rods, reels, etc?
Posted on 6/11/17 at 6:15 pm to wickowick
Nope learn me about the HMS. I know there are certain permits for landing certain fish but we haven't gotten too deep into all of that as we haven't gotten to that point.
We are in the process of getting a complete rig out for the boat. We don't want to go and buy all this stuff without the knowledge of what the right stuff to buy is.
We also aren't the type of people to buy "cheap" stuff. But we don't have to buy talicas for everything.
That said we are planning to get saragosas 8000 matched with either terez or tallus 7" medium heavy rods. We figure that will cover us for a decent amount of ability with a spinner. We will probably only get two of those setups right now as we already have one baitrunner that belongs to the owner of the boat and one of the guys that comes with us has two baitrunner setups as well.
On the boat we have a talica 25 and a Shimano 30a. The same guy that always comes with us also has a talica and a 30a.
We know it's not nearly enough to have a full rig but it's a start and we are desperately searching for good information on what we need to get ourselves rigged up.
To save for confusion it is three of us good buddies that are kind of fishing and hunting buddies and trying to run and use this boat.

Assuming you have all the safety equipment....
You're gonna need Atleast 4 30w or 50w conventional reels and their respective rods.
Can't really go wrong with shimano tiagra, AVET, or Penn internationals.
You'll also need a couple gaffs. 6'+ are good. I recommend aftco for good and affordable.
Most of the tackle can be found used or on sale if you don't get in a hurry to buy, or of course you can always buy new.

I have a brother that fishes out of Destin a bunch. He would prob be glad to show y'all in exchange for trips. Shoot me an email at headedwest21 at gmail
Prob be a whole lot better to start with trips to the nipple before running all the way to the floaters.

Agreed about that. We were looking at the squiggles elbow and the nipple. All the regulars just want to know what to do when there

Id start reading saltwater sportsman also
Learn all the knots and how to properly rig heavier equipment, trolling gear, etc...
Go with a good charter captain on his boat and take notes

Will do
My buddy has a hardon for talica 25's. Would that cover us for most of what we are trying to do trolling those areas and possibly heading out to the floaters.
I can't see using a 50 series reel being that it's a center console and most fishing would be done standing up.
How does it compare to the tiagra 30w in terms of capabilities.

For what it sounds like y'all want to do, I see no need for a big 50. 30s should be fine.

I know many love the talicas in all sizes. For closer in i like my Calcutta 700s and 400s for cobia and snapper but some prefer a good spinning reel because of the smooth drag.

I think we will try to go spinning setups and fish lighter lines 30lbs leaders to try and coax some fish out of the hard fished reefs.
Any suggestions on a spinning setup different than what I previously stated?

Watch the forecast. You may want to go, but you don't have to go. The Gulf can occasionally give you all you want, even with a boat like that.
