Save your joints if your really heavy, too
It's an old article, but still has some good info in it.
For two years, I ran 5-6 days a week for 2 - 6 miles a day. Training for two halfs along the way. I never had any knee problems. Only the odd calf strain and foot injury from adding to much mileage to quick. I was 30-32 at the time.
How Bad is Running for Your Knees?

If you don't like running, don't run. It simply isn't that effective for weight loss to grind through an activity you don't enjoy.
Your diet is the most important part, but (if you don't like weight training), find a hill. Do walking repeats until you can do running repeats. I promise this will be more effective than grinding through three mile runs you don't enjoy.

Any running tips to make more bearable? Thanks for any help guys
I'm a runner that doesnt really enjoy running at all. Download the overdrive app and link it to your local library. You'll have endless choices of free audiobooks you can download. Getting into a good book makes the time/miles go by much quicker whether your running or walking them.
I don't allow myself to listen to the book unless I'm running. That's makes me get back out there.
I'm running on the levee so no fear of not hearing cars around me while listening to the books. (Will probably get run over by levee board vehicle later this morning since I made that statement).

So why make yourself miserable and run?
Long story short... find exercises you like to do. Start off doing body weight and getting a good base for yourself. Something as simple as p90x which incorporates all kind of body weights exercises will make you lose more fat than running ever will.

Ive never enjoyed running but if i can grin & bear for a while, ill get over that.
i hated running when i started a few years back. now i can't get enough. when you get better and you can go longer and vary your routine, it becomes far more enjoyable.
you can do things like interval sprints (200-400m going nearly max speed, then 200-400m walking or very light job), build up runs where you start slow and over a few miles increase pace to a peak then slow down, etc.
but if you are a good deal overweight, it may be smart to lose some weight via swimming, elliptical, biking, weightlifting, rowing, etc before running. you can put some serious tear on your joints, even if you are young.

OP you're going to need to change your diet significantly. It's probably more important than the type of exercise you choose to do.

8 week beginner's guide
I started 11 years ago with a similar program. I had never been successful at running until I followed a walk to run program.

When it comes to shoes, get what fits you and is comfy. Most runners have tried multiple brands. After a few years of trial and error I landed in some Saucony Kinvaras. Ran in them for years. Over the last 2-3 years I switched to Altra. Wider toebox and variety of sole thicknesses.
