T-Nation: "Do you meet these 5 fitness standards?"

I enjoy reading T-Nation. Saw this and thought I'd share. The list in the link has hyperlinks to help with each individual one.

ETA: I thought there were more hyperlinks in the article. My mistake. There is only one.

Think of this as a template, not a complete prescription. This is a comprisal of the qualities that develop a savage. It's up to you to determine what you need. Here are a few simple screens:
quote:
1. Can't deadlift two times your body weight? You need to get stronger.
2. Can't broad jump eight feet? You need more power.
3. Can't touch your toes? You need mobility.
4. Can't run a mile without stopping? You need better conditioning. I'm not saying you need to run miles at a time or improve your mile time, but every self-respecting man should be able to run a mile without having to take a breather.
5. Can't hold an iso-lunge for a minute without taking a break? You need to get tougher.
It might be that you need to develop all these qualities or just a couple. If you're confused about where to start, improve your mobility and get stronger.

I need better conditioning I'm wretched
Posted on 6/1/17 at 10:53 am to Hu_Flung_Pu
I can run a mile pretty freaking fast. After that, I'm close to worthless.

I can run for a 100m and I'm worthless after that. I was built for speed not distance. That's what I always say.

T-Nation hates science and facts generally

2x body weight deadlift isnt hard but its not exactly easy either. I feel like most normal people could do the other 4
better goal to strive for would be 3-5 strict pullups. the average guy cant do a pullup and most females cannot all together
touching toes? meh. You're basically measuring hamstring tightness. Better: can you perform a simple body weight squat with perfect form. On the flip side from pullups, most younger women can without a hitch. A lot of guys cannot properly. Older women struggle. ankle & hip flexibility are needed, core stability, and even some coordination. This exposes desk sitters and lazy arses.

I agree.

I have horrible hip flexibility. Just terrible. Anytime I need to sit flat on the ground or floor is horrible. "Indian style", not happening.

I haven't been able to deadlift 360 pounds since I was in high school.

I'd say deadlifting 2x body weight is more hard than "isn't hard". Most very modest lifters prolly can't do this.
Speaking of, are straps a disqualifier on DL's?

Most places I see say that one times your bodyweight is all you need to deadlift.

chad if you are DL'ing regularly you could hit 2x body weight rather quickly
ive known people that have hit close to that number the first time pulling. Guys that just have a naturally strong lower body.

ya. Dont even start training with them. If you're DLing 500 then ya, bust them out

Think I need to keep working on my form, few things I need to fix. Was watching some videos earlier

without knowing your problems the 3 biggest things i see people struggle with
1- in the set up, hips start too low. while gripping the bar, raise your hips until you feel tension in the hamstrings. Make sure your shoulders are back.
2- weight in the foot is on the toes, and not the heel. Once you get your hips straight, and tension in the hammys, make sure you are back in your heels when you start the pull
3- shooting the hips up when starting the pull (stripper butt). You want your hips and shoulders to rise in unison. Make sure that butt doesnt shoot up alone.
and as always, hook grip the bar. keep bar as close as possible to body on the pull. Never lose lumbar integrity

Yea main things is I think I start hips too low without hammy tension. Haven't tried the hook grip, need to so I can better hold the heavier weight

hook grip is a game changer. It wont be comfortable over night, though. Give it a month or so and you'll reap the benefits with no discomfort
