John Oliver was decent at first...his problem is there are only so many things you can be outraged about on a weekly basis. So once he started running out of the low aging fruit and had to start reaching, his 'rants' became lame, unoriginal, and just boring

John Oliver's program was great when it conducted research on little known issues or miscarriages of justice. Exposing local government corruption for instance.
His narcissistic rants about a narcissist president doesn't exactly float my boat, but I guess that's his default now- cliche liberal outrage.

I agree with you, but my guess is that he received marching orders from production. HBO has a good sense of its audience and what sells. Working unique or quirky stories, especially with a local bent, just doesn't sell very well; they seem to have shifted a decent chunk of that to their Vice platforms. Ranting about Trump over and over again is cathartic and sells to a subscription audience that I would guess leans left.

Nah, I like Oliver, but he definitely shifted a bit from his early days. Part of it is simply having an administration that is such an easy target, and part of it is his predilection towards Obama and away from conservatives.
He does interesting things still, but it's not like it was in 2014 or 2015.
And from what I've heard, Vice is getting a jump on some stuff that would have been all Oliver's a few years ago.
