yeah no kidding. Can you imagine? The repercussions would be enormous.

I would sue the shite out of someone. Hopefully if this happens, there will be some grandfather clause or something.

Sounds like it would suck. So when can we stop the program?

I'd like to see cuts elsewhere. I'm not too keen on this idea.
I realize no one wants their ox gored but there's an awful lot of redundancy and waste that we could eliminate. This program is actually beneficial.

fricking the people is not the answer.
Removal of the precipating cause is the answer.
This program is a symptom. Fix the system and remove the program. Removal of the program without fixing the system causes more problems than it fixes. No ifs ands or buts.

When you remove public service non profit jobs.
Posted on 5/18/17 at 12:19 pm to Tiguar
Also when you stop freely giving loans so schools have no issue charging 150-300k for professional degrees.
Posted on 5/18/17 at 12:21 pm to Tiguar
Yeah, unless you get the 4-5 substantial scholarships offered per class or have OT rich parents you are coming out of med, dental, law, etc school with at least six figures these days. But hey, we're getting coal back!!

Isn't this a step towards that?
Posted on 5/18/17 at 12:22 pm to uway
No. Not really. There is only one step to stopping that. No federal student loans. Issue solved.

Agree with you in this thread.
The public service forgiveness is the type of program that makes all the sense in the world and any reasonable person could see the value behind it, IF the government could manage such a program well.

Isn't working that way. A lady I used to work with at Birmingham City Schools was able to get the amount she paid in student loans to the government each month down to $0 a month because she "owned a business" that really her husband owned and ran and put in her name so they could get minority female business contracts, so after 10 years she would have her loans forgiven and have paid not a single red cent.
ETA: I don't blame her, but the program is definitely a waste.

I'm fine with removing it if the system is completely overhauled to Mr cartons capitalist paradise where healthcare is treated as a profitable commodity and salaries increase.
Sadly, that is simply not the country we live in.

They never should have trusted the federal government to begin with.

Yep. Instead we have moron pols trying to incentivize MORE people to go to college, water down our degrees some more, and rack up more debt. I shudder to think what kids will be paying in 10 years if this isn't fixed.

My wife and I are both teachers and we are both 5 years into this program. We both work at lower income schools so that we can qualify for the PSLF. If the government does away with this program, you bet your arse my wife and I will jump ship and go to a better school. This will cause many good teachers to leave low income school thus making them worst.
Between my wife and I, we spend $1000 a month on student loans and are depending on this program when we become eligible in 5 more years.
I am an avid Trump supporter but I do not support getting rid of PSLF.

If everyone is going to cry when cuts are made then just resign yourself to $100,000,000,000,000+ in national debt.
I don't want to hear any bitching from those on the right if they only support cuts to others.

If it's a public school you're eligible regardless of the school's income level.

I support cuts to waste, not programs like this or cutting medical research.
