I'm an attorney who recently started my first job after passing the bar. My father wants to buy me a nice briefcase in celebration and he told me to decide on one I like.
So, what briefcases do yall have or recommend? Should I go soft case, hard case, rolling, shoulder strap, leather, etc.?
Pics and links would be appreciated.

If you don't walk into court with a trapper keeper, no one is going to take you seriously.
Juries listen to guys with trapper keepers.

I would go with a nice leather, soft case one for the gift from your dad. Then, get a utilitarian rolling one as well.

Anything from the Tumi arrive line.
I have the midsize one. I don't see myself using anything else in the future.
If you're thinking of getting the slim one, definitely go and put your hands on it first. It's really thin.

Be careful, anything over the top and you look like a doucher.
I have a black canvas briefcase from Landsend that I got in 1995. Its faded and beat up (like the owner) but still solid and not pretentious.

People still carry briefcases? Figured they were all just laptop bags at this point.

We were getting ready to fed ex about two inches of medical records to a defense firm in Chicago and they emailed back that they were a paperless firm and sent us a drop box.

if you will be doing courtroom work, you will need a different kind of bag than you would want to carry on a daily basis. check amazon for "attorney briefcase." the big rolling bags are what most attorneys carry for serious cases. you should get a nice soft leather or canvas briefcase for day to day use. i like a filson. orvis makes a nice leather briefcase. saddleback makes good ones. i would avoid getting anything too flashy at this stage of your career.
