Then Andy told The Advocate (Dellenger, I believe) that the first time he ever knew about the job was when Mainieri told him he would be hired after his call with Cohen.

quote:

"I walked into Paul Mainieri's office on Thursday, I believe," Cannizaro said. "... When I got into his office, Paul asked me to close the door, so I really didn't know what was going on. I got worried for a second. Then he immediately told me he just got off the phone with John Cohen, that John Cohen would be named the new athletic director at Mississippi State, and John would like to reach out to me in regards to the head coaching position here at Mississippi State. "He expressed he had a very high level of interest in making me the head coach here, and wanted permission to talk about the job. John and I spoke on the phone for a while right after my meeting with Paul, and things really progressed over the next 24 to 48 hours. It happened really quickly, guys."

Aside from the fact that everyone could smell the obvious bullshite, I don't have a problem with the way Mainieri or Cannizaro responded to the Advocate at that time.

What would it possibly have helped if these details came out then? It would have made a lot of people look bad.

Cannizaro himself said he was surprised when Mainieri told him Cohen was going to call him and offer him the head coaching job at Miss St. Should we have just assumed Cannizaro was lying when he said that?

I guess now it appears we should have....

Yeah, we all knew that was bullshite. Regardless of rumors that just stunk with lies.

To rick's point, it was a tough thing to believe to begin with. I think I asked this when it was first announced, but as a state school, does Mississippi have any public hiring requirements? I even remember linking State's own website.

"Massaging the truth"

It really did allow for Cannizaro's hiring to be the story (at the time) and not some sort of bad blood or potential tampering to be the story.

It wasn't like you had to be a Holmesian level mind to deduce that State wouldn't tell Mainieri they wanted Cannizaro without talking to him first. Only a pollyanna would have taken that at face value.

Mainieri wasn't happy for Cannizaro then and he isn't happy for him now. Paul is an egotist who holds grudges, Cohen pulled one over him and I guarantee you his arse hasn't unclinched since November.

The only reason I could ever come up with that Andy wouldn't tell Paul about Cohen reaching out is that Andy thought Paul would sabotage him. Paul hasn't done much to convince the public he wouldn't have given he mentions Andy is short on experience every chance he gets.

I agree. But I was only going by what Cannizaro had said how the events transpired.

I guess I wanted to believe him.

My mistake.

That's fair enough. The issue I had was you all but called Ell a liar and cited Occam's razor over and over despite it not being the simplest explanation. All's forgiven. Andy handled it like a shitbag, undoubtedly at the hest of chief a-hole John Cohen.

Hell, Paul's own words show he was trying to sabotage Andy." Why would you hire him?" WTF

Whatever we do, let's don't give Coach Will Wade this memo.

I actually assume (with close to 100% confidence) that PM knew about Canni talking to Cohen before I did. No reason that info would come to me before it came to him. And like I said back in November, they were both lying to save face.

Also, this all goes back to how much time PM had to find Canni's replacement... PM and others have leaned on how little time he had... well...

Regardless of if he knew about it 2-3 weeks before than what he claims, that's still not an ideal time to have to replace a hitting coach/head recruiter

NO ONE COULD HAVE FOUND SOMEONE TO TAKE THE PREMIER ASSISTANT JOB IN COLLEGE BASEBALL IN NOVEMBER!

Not saying that, we clearly punted on the coaching search, with that said, it still wasn't a good time for all that shite to go down.

And that's a fair point. Fall isn't the time coaches move. But Canni was in line (with PM's approval) to interview for the Tulane job. What was PM's plan then? I'd argue it would be the exact same. He's been wanting to separate the recruiter and hitting coach for a while. He just doesn't emphasize that position. Never has.
