Older folks: What do you remember about the Cold War?

When I read contemporary articles about life in the 50s and 60s with the threat of nuclear destruction I can't relate to this narrative that we were scared to death of the world ending. What I remember:
1. The Russians had spies. We had spies. It seemed fair to me.
2. My mom was scared during the Cuban missile crisis. Dad, Bro and I were not. We said, 'Mom, I don't think New Iberia is a target for the Russians. Relax and make us a sammich.'
3. The Russians claimed that they invented everything. Except baseball.
4. Fluoridated water was a Communist plot. Some states didn't approve it till the early 60s.
5. Warner Bros did a lot of anti-Nazi and anti-Japanese cartoons in the 40s. For some reason they didn't do any anti-Communist or anti-Russian cartoons in the 50s. The closest thing to it was Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale.
What do ya'll remember?

Worldview seemed simpler, though it wasn't, two superpowers at odds, declare your camp and let the chips fall
don't remember Cuban missile crisis
spies were spies and we assumed there were spies
remember the spy plane shoot down
both sides armed to the max and prevented anything from going too stupid
competition between the two played out in the Olympics
China seemed to be a bit player at the time

I remember these things doing constant flybys of my ship anytime we were east of the international date line.

I never watch the Olympics anymore but I was riveted during the Cold War to watch the USA v. USSR. One thing I learned later was that their basketball team was not made up of Russians. They were mostly Lithuanians because they're taller. After the USSR broke up their basketball went to hell because Lithuania was a separate state.
In 1990 I met a guy named Stepanzi. I asked the origins of his name. He said "Lithuanian Jew". He was about 6-7.

Hollywood trying to convince us that not all Soviets were evil.

USA had a bigger stick. The rest of world respected America.

Dairy farm on the upper Tickfaw River...Grandpa who fished/hunted almost every day of his life.....pretty much all I remember was a school drill to jump under our desk. Drew a blank really...too much work and good stuff going on to care.

That was boring stuff. We got a film (on one of those old reel-to-reel projectors) about how to survive in the bomb shelter. It was 9th grade boys PE and the coach made us sit down on the gym floor.
It was about preserving water in the underground shelter. Then personal hygiene came up. They showed a 40 year old woman take her clothes off and wash her pussy. That's when coach shut the film off and said "Uh, I think this was supposed to go to the girls gym class. Sorry."

Maverick should have been Top Gun, but Ice played the game.

nah.
It was pretty routine...and usually there were a couple tomcats on it's tail hoping that it would make a wrong turn.

In 1977 I saw the Russian national team play the Birmingham Bulls in an exhibition game. At one point, after the puck had gone back up the ice, Steve Durbano was squatting on top of a Russian, beating his face to a pulp. The crowd went wild.

Gives the phrase Russian roulette a little different meaning.

Hiding under my desk during civil defense drills
Thinking I would be a quick goner - lived ~90 miles from SAC HQ
My dad drove for the secret service in Paris when Ike and Krushchev were negotiating the Powers issue - he has some awesome stories
After I was in the military at the end of the cold war I got to see the wall come down. Funny part is the E/W Germany reunification was somewhat accidental. A gate guard fricked up on the East side.
It was interesting to say the least

That reminds me. Back then Cuba had some great boxers. Teo Stevenson could have beaten Ali. But now you never hear about Cuban boxers. Just baseball players.

"Duck and cover" type educational films from the 50s & 60s were a staple in public schools through the 70s & into the 80s, as were the drills. My friends and I did a super 8 spoof film where after a nuclear strike, the only survivors were the kids who did the duck and cover move in the hallways of school - wish I still had a copy of that middle school humor greatness.
