My former in-laws attended one set up in Plaquemines Parish after desegregation was enforced. I doubt it's still there, since Buras doesn't really exist anymore, but I'm sure kids who attend those schools now do understand the history (as much as a teenager who has no life experience can understand something like desegregation).

My entire father's family is from Port Sulphur / Pointe la Hache.

The two High Schools are now combined into South Plaquemines High School (I think that's the name). My brother's girlfriend teaches math there.

I went to False River Academy in New Roads from mid 80's to early 90's. Graduated from there. There were no minorities when I was there, but there are a dozen or so now. The public schools in Pointe Coupee were horrendous at the time. All you had to choose from were FRA or Catholic, or some parents drove their kids to St. Francisville. We knew why the school was started and why there were no black kids there. The school and parish as a whole was pretty racist back then, that's gotten better now. The public schools are still garbage, but they have the new STEM Magnet school that is putting the hurt on FRA and Catholic. It's a public school but you have to maintain a 2.75gpa and have no conduct issues to get in. I don't see FRA lasting but 2 or 3 more years unless they make drastic changes to provide something the STEM school doesn't. I hate to see the school fail, but I don't know how they'll pull themselves out of the hole they're in. The elementary is the only thing keeping them afloat right now, as the STEM school doesn't start until 5th grade.
